BTW, cos I'm way ahead of the pack re: Bowie.....this is an awesome video and perfect example of how Bowie was way ahead of the pack, also:
Being both more Scoattish and aulder, fer whit it’s worth, Ah pronoounce it ‘BOW’ (as in crossBOW) and then ‘wee’. Ye might think Ah’d say BOOwie, but Ah’d say tae Ye; ‘Remember the Alamo’. Incidentally, two coows in a field - one says ‘Moo’ the other says ‘Ah wiz gonnae say that.’
Tae be fair tae Doubs, the character ‘Major Tom’ is in quite a few songs ‘Major Tom is a fictional astronaut referenced in David Bowie's songs "Space Oddity", "Ashes to Ashes", "Hallo Spaceboy", "New Killer Star" and "Blackstar".’ The question ‘What was the whole major tom thing about?’ is <Northern Irish accent> LEGITIMATE. My original reply is therefore, one of a wanker but Ah’m trying tae change ma wicked ways.
The guy mentions major tom in like 8 of his songs. It's a worthy inquiry. It's fucking weird if you don't wonder.
"the" = "major tom." This is the level of discourse here. This is where I spend my free time? What the hell is wrong with me?
Lol. The guy mentions major tom in 8 different songs. And I'm supposed to just accept it and not wonder what the fuck?
So, we know he's taken his protein pills, made the grade, wears nice shirts, floats aroond, gets lost in space, loves his wife, becomes a junkie, cannae get things done, travels tae a distant planet, dies, his spirit raises a metre high and exclaims 'I'm a Blackstar'... whit else? Themes and narratives will establish motive. One more thing... tale has it, Elton John's 'Rocketman' wiz alsae aboot Major Tom.
There’s nothing to wonder about The character is the protagonist introduced in Space Oddity and Bowie playfully alludes to him in later songs connected in some way with space
O'neill voice, wagging finger: 'Naw, Naw, Naw!' There's more tae it. Apollo 11 at 50: A history of David Bowie's Major Tom character - Gold
Tae me the whole 'Whit' s Major Tom all aboot?' question has more depth than the Bowie or not to Bowie question. Bennett might say, "well start your own thread then, twattypants", and he'd be right to Hooever, look at whit' s happened so far... Good banter over Bowie's name, Doubs saying that Bowie made him question his sexuality - this is a question we aulder laddies had tae face in the time we grew up. Imagine wearing a Bowie t-shirt tae Ibrox in the mid-eighties. Ye might as well have 'Ah'm a Total Bufty' tattooed on yer foreheid. Ah USED tae like the Smiths and MORRISSEY, they were similar in that a lottae gadges thought if Ye listened tae them, Ye must be a pillow biter. Anyhoo, back tae the Major Tom conundrum. Ye've got Doub's asking something which diz need some answering - whether there's deeper meaning or just a bit of a laugh from Bowie. Viva la difference!
