Meh. Zep by a landslide considering their entire catalogue, even though I'm not a fan by any stretch. DP do have arguably the most well known riff of all time though, as much as you may hate it, has to count for something though.

 

That's just it: Led Zeppelin's catalogue is vastly overrated as are Led Zeppelin.

The truth is, they were done by 1973.

And no-one likes Zeppelin more than I.

One of these bands had great songs and a dynamic exciting rhythm section

The other didn't have a single genuinely good song and had a 'Eavy rhythm section supporting a hugely irritating vocalist and two absolutely unbearable tits who played rock and roll exactly like what they were: a pair of cunts not good enough at classical music to hack it with a community orchestra ... outside of ELP digging up Modest Mussorgsky's corpse (and by proxy, Ravel's) and subjecting it to sexual abuse, it's hard to fathom a more despicable display of musical charlatanism than Lord's pathetic "Concerto" wherein he and Blackmore trade licks in front of an ensemble neither was qualified to shine the shoes of... utter disgrace

A totally minor, insignificant band who influenced only daft metalheads ... I've been playing music for 30 years and I've met like two guys that thought highly of Deep Purple... both were deaf wankers who sludged away on their respective instruments, not a clue in their thick heads about dynamics, harmony, song structure, swinging

It's SHIT... the only comparison between these bands is era, hairstyles and country of origin

Anyway, Led Zeppelin (who I like) represented this genre's ´height´, with mystical, overblown epics, ventures into the world of the occult, blatant cock-rock attitude and a pretentiousness that had no equal. Agreed?

Black Sabbath (who I also like) took the genre to its ultimate 'height', to the point where it was already on the border of gross, with nothing but Tony Iommi's riffs to save them from a total tailspin into gothic banality.
99% of their followers were stupid and trashy, soon to enter the Wastebin of Rock History.

Deep Purple were never stupid or blatant enough to pretend that what they were playing was something bigger than just rock'n'roll with a little bit more distortion and a lot more speed/flashiness than usual - they´re just limited in style.
They have probably 2-3 classic albums against Zeppelin´s 4-5.
