Don't try to visit legitimacy onto the sheer vulgarity of things like Utoya by associating it with the mainstream. The Hitler Jugend were pretty mainstream at one time- don't forget that.

It is the height of immorality to try to hone the political mind of an underage, still-growing child, corral them on an island for this purpose, indoctrinate them with lefty ideas about foreign and domestic threats, and then fail to take even the single smallest safeguards against these threats, leaving these undeveloped children to fend for themselves on a small island while being pursued by a killer that the "mainstream" allowed to walk onto the island.

 

Yes, a normal summer camp for politically active teens and young adults. Here in Northern Europe they have existed long before Hitler Jugend and after them, there is simply nothing special here.

If your take is that teens are not allowed to be interested in politics, then ok. Perhaps then we should also ban all camps by church such as confirmation school, football camps (who knows what they do in them) etc.

 

You are missing the point. I don't think Teens should be THAT politically active.

What happened to Johannes Buo and others was immoral- at both ends of the scale.

 

If these camps are part of why Scandavia has the most politically engaged and well informed citizenries in the world they sound like a pretty good idea to me.

 

Well thats open to debate. Most people develop their political conscience after they develop their pubes, but hey, maybe Norway and Sweden and Denmark are way out in front on that score. I hear they have some pretty good cartoonists, not that everyone up there agrees on this.

In addition, it would be nice if these engaged and well informed peoples might inform themselves of some basic self-defences, like....sidearms or something.

Again, just to reiterate my point- I find the words "14 year old political activist" to be somewhat self-contradicting. The least people responsible for his/her activism can do is look after them, instead of leaving them to swim into freezing waters whilst being chased by a lone gunman.

 

The thing is, a mass murder such as this has NEVER happened in Nordic countries, not even in Finland where people kill their families and themselves for a hobby. Hiring armed guards to this place would have been seen as a ridiculous exaggeration by everyone. So while it is easy to be clever afterwards, nobody saw this coming

 

They should try fly fishing or something.
