There was only ONE serious theme about the movie - Woody's gambling problem. He consistently kept blowing the money he won on the court and causing his gf to leave him. That's IT!

Literally EVERYTHING else about the movie is centered around Woody/Wesley annoying the shit outta eachother, hustling brothas on the court, annoying eachother more until it finally hits em that they've become best friends.

There's VERY VERY little serious/dramatic in tone about the movie.

I would categorize it as a sports comedy. Period.

There's sports DRAMAS, like Rudy, Rocky, The Champ, ect...

And there's sports comedies, like WMCJ.

I almost forgot one of my favorite late sixties comedies, A Guide For The Married Man starring Walter Matthau, Robert Morse and a stellar cast like Lucille Ball, Jayne Mansfield, Jack Benny, Art Carney, Terry Thomas and lots of other 60's stars in cameo roles. Directed by Gene Kelly is one of the funniest films about cheating that you'll ever watch. PG humor of course.
