Cuevas was not much of a fighter - let's face it. His biggest distinction was as a Mexican fighter who weighed more than 130.
It's also reasonable to say he cheated. His trainer admitted to it. I don't see the problem. EDIT- I actually asked this question awhile back as I didn't know much about it. Basically, no one ever comes out and says he didn't cheat, merely quibble about how much advantage he gained from it. Does that really matter? The question is: did he cheat? The answer is yes.
That's cool, but defenses against who? I thought you knew boxing is not about numbers, but about who you beat. Mayorga at least has the Forrest win, Cuevas has nothing comparable, he's famous for his losses. He never beat any top fighter, but got dominated by each and every quality opponent.
His challengers were solid... The fact that you don't seem aware of who any of them are isn't my problem. He lost to a legend in a horrible style match up for him. That was the end of him. But for four years he was a terror. Espada (x3) , Campanino, Shields, Clyde Gray, Ranzany and Harold Weston were all good, solid, world-level welterweights and he beat all of them, often savagely. The Duran fight is a joke, he hadn't fought in two years, and he'd lost to Roger Stafford of all people before that. Cuevas was one of these guys who comes out of nowhere, wins a belt, becomes about 10 times better than he used to be, has a great run and then once again becomes mediocre and ordinary after losing the title (see Joe Brown, one of the best lightweight champs ever, but basically an inconsistent and super-skilled journeyman before and after the reign) Cuevas was ordinary, won a title, became extraordinary and then crashed back down to Earth hard after losing to maybe the most extraordinary Welterweight (in terms of matchup issues) in history. That was it for him, his confidence was shot and he never came back from it. Thomas Hearns would have treated Mayorga much the same way. And Vernon Forrest ain't Tommy Hearns, he's not even Mark Breland. Mayorga was shit... in an even fight, he landed a wild bomb and beat Forrest. In the rematch, he did nothing but pose and make threatening gestures while Forrest (who fought like a scared girl, but still probably deserved the win) blocked and deflected his skilless flailing bombs. Mayorga never beat anybody worth a damn after that. He was so FEROCIOUS that he failed to retain his title against the legendary Cory "Hands of Cotton" Spinks. Mayorga is the most well-publicized cartoon character in boxing history. Losing big before getting knocked out in the 12th round by the most overrated guy in the last 20 years (Mosley, ESPECIALLY at 154 of all places) after having already been annihlated by DLH and Trinidad says a lot more about MOsley than it does about Mayorga. He was fucking trash. Cuevas was a champion and a good one, a dominant one. Mayorga was a shit-talking spectacle who made for good copy.
I don't think cuevas was a much better fighter than Mayorga. Mayorga has more good wins, while Cuevas has longevity. And Mayorga has given hell to most fighter he faced, the same cannot be said about Cuevas. They're pretty much equal
