Hatton's team is the one who turned it down back then. They wanted to build a bigger name in America and make the prize fight a richer one, which they did.

damn, i never really liked mayweather, but i acknowledge the fact that he's arguably the best fighter i've ever seen.

what else does he have to do to?

what the fuck has cotto done so far into his career?

what are folks going to say if mayweather beats him too? that he ducked clottey? paul williams? margarito?

shame on scribes like steve kim and doug fischer for their continuous hate. same applies to you message boarders who are in denial.

Cotto's beaten a string of solid veterans, prospects, fringe contenders, and now beat a top contender/aging great at 147 in Mosley. If he isn't the #1 contender for Mayweather's welterweight title, he's up there.

Mayweather-Cotto is the #1 fight to be made in the sport.

Depends on what you want him to be seen as?

If you want to see him being a great talent, he has proven that many times already. Especially as a super-featherweight he looked as good as any fighter from the history (yes I said it).

If you want to see him as an all-time great, he already is that too. Marvellous career, multiple titles, big names on record.

If you want to see him as the legit welterweight champ, he is that. He beat the titlist.

If you want to see him as a dominant champ or p4p the best fighter, then he should face and beat the best of his division, which he obviously hasn't done.

that's fine, but why don't folks shit on cotto for not calling out paul williams or margarito yet praise him when he beats up on judah who was coming off of two consecutive losses one of which came against a journeyman.

mayweather's run at 130 > whatever cotto has achieved thus far into his career.

knocking out hatton was the best win of mayweather's legacy, to date. his greatest career achievement. mayweather certainly must rank among the greatest lightweights EVER!

for some reason pernell whitaker defeats chavez at welterweight and it defines his career. his best victory. mayweather beats a naturally bigger (though not as talented or accomplished guy), in hatton- and its for shit according to some dullards. go figure.

he's not the best fighter p4p? then who is?

only calzaghe would fit your requirement since he beat kessler to claim to be the absolute best in the division.

floyd was a dominant champ at 130, 135, and the biggest fight that eluded him at 140 just happened on saturday and he won in an emphatic fashion.

at 147, the super mega fight was supposed to be against judah but judah fucked it all up by losing to baldomir, yet still floyd beat them both.

cotto's finally coming onto his own but so fucking what? the guy never calls anyone out and says the same shit like 'i'll let my promoter bob arum handle all of that.' whenever someone asks him who he wants to fight.

only good serviceable fighter that tirelessly called out floyd was margarito and he ended up losing to paul williams also losing chance at the mayweather sweepstakes in the process.

Obviously there is double standards, part of it being that Mayweather is considered the top fighter in the sport, part of it being from Floyd's own mouth.

Personally I thought Cotto was taking too long to fight the elite fighters of a weight class, especially when taking into account the much quicker progress of two previous well-promoted Top Rank fighters with extensive amateur backgrounds who had a mega fight earlier this year.

Cotto is there at the elite of a division now, so there should be no excuses for him if his opposition level isn't what it should be.

mayweather is now in a position to do whatever pleases him the most. beating cotto might enhance his legacy furthermore, but perhaps it might not, since all of his delusional haters will always come up w/ some bullshit excuses much like what happened after the hatton fight.

yet there are plenty of guys who picked hatton to win.

not to mention what's obvious to all of us with a brain which is that Hatton is a significantly smaller man than PBF. this was not apparent in any of the examples Sly cites. which i guess is par for the course when it comes to examples Sly resorts to in order to support his arguments.

calling Hatton naturally bigger is ridiculous. there's no way you can possibly believe that. if you do you're an idiot, which i know you not to be.

Which is why you won't see Hatton going up to 154 or 160...he might not even come back to 147 (unless Oscar comes calling).

I was in fact referring to hatton being naturally bigger than chavez. anyhow I've met hatton and he's a considerably thicker dude than mayweather. being taller and having longer arms doesn't mean everything. is paul williams naturally bigger than mike tyson.

I didnt say Whitaker didn't, or that Chavez did.

But Whitaker, himself, wasn't a very big welterweight (or a junior middleweight)...he was in fact much smaller than guys like DLH and Trinidad (and Vasquez)...whom he fought.

what amuses me most is how people demand mayweather fight these bigger guys. then they constantly complain that the fight is boring and that mayweather doesn't open up enough to try and stop these stronger, heavier guys who can take his shots better.

when he actually fights guys close to his size like hatton and judah he does in fact press the action and go for stoppages because his punches are actually affecting his opponent.

There is no more reason to hate on Floyd. He has taken on and beaten every worthy challenge in 5 weight classes.

I prefer to see guys fighting the best in their divisions and unifying belts- to me it always seems that the best way to solve the problem of all of these ABC Alphabet belts is for one guy to fight for and win all of them. No argument's then, right?

This is why I would pick Calzaghe, because he fought the OTHER guy in his division holding belts, the one guy everyone wanted him to fight and the one guy the haters expected to expose him, and he beat him clearly.

Pavlik is in a similar position, as he fought (and beat) arguably the no1 contender in Miranda and then beat the linear MW champ; both with KO's. If Abraham grew a pair and decided to fight Pavlik next year, then the winner would be a prime candidate for 2008 FOTY, for the same reasons as JC is in 2007.

Floyd in 2007 beat a shop-worn, semi-retired ODLH and Hatton. :dunno:

The Hatton win was impressive, no doubt, but what it served to enforce really is that those of us who picked Hatton were wrong to put the Collazo performance down to a one-off; the reality is that whilst Hatton is a top 10 lb4lb fighter based on his wins/ability at 140, he is no more than a B-Level fighter at 147. Hatton may well have lost to PBF at 140 also, but he would not have been dominated like he was from round 5/6 onwards like he was on Saturday IMO.

The victory over Oscar DECREASED PBF's FOTY candidacy, IMO. I expected him to win a fight against the promoter ODLH with ease, and he ended up with a close split decision W.

It'll go to Floyd, but both Pavlik and Calzaghe would be better winners.

Pavlik should win it this year. His wins were more impressive than anyone elses.

He hasn't and that's the problem.

Welter is possibly THE most loaded division in boxing right now, and most people's top 5 would read PBF, Cotto, Cintron, Williams and Margarito (in any order).

Floyd has fought none of these guys.

I actually think he'd beat all bar Williams with relative comfort, but until he does so, there will remain things for the haters to pick at.

What you are forgetting is that Baldomir and Judah were top 5 at the time when Floyd disposed of them. They are no longer there largely due to Floyd. So now Floyd can take on whoever else if he remains active.

So were Margarito,Clottey and possibly Cintron and Williams top 10 for sure...Bumdomir was the dude of the year in boxing that got lucky.....and Mayweather was the lucky one to draw the ticket to the easy linear championship victory against Bumdomir...

But that was NOT this year, and so this is irrelevant to the 2007 FOTY award :nono:

at the time, cintron was in the process of rebuilding himself, clottey was (still is) a nobody and so was williams. what point would it have made for floyd if he had fought them in non-lucrative fights that no one gave a fuck about?

at least baldo had televised wins over Judah and Gatti and held a belt.

Cotto was already scheduled to Fight Mosley and Judah this year so forget about him for now.

Would beating Cintron and Margarito been more noteworthy than beating De la Hoya at 154lbs and the undefeated P4P star Ricky Hatton?

    Honestly?

IMO, yes, for the reasons I explained above.

If he'd beaten a PRIME ODLH and then Hatton at 140, then my answer would have been different...

Sure, but again, that was 2006 and NOT 2007, by which time Williams was not a nobody and Cintron was/is a live challenger...
