But what about Oscar in 2007?? He wasn't exactly prime either.

Vargas in 2000 was prime. And he was better than Canelo, Cotto, Hatton, Maidana, old Mosley, and old Oscar.

2002 Oscar was still prime by the time Vargas fought him.

I've said this before, fighting dela Hoya at 154lbs when he was barely used to the 147lbs limit trumps fighting cintron, Williams and margarito. If a guy decides to test himself against Thor do you say he ducked daredevil and black widow? Come on! Oscar was far more formidable than those three.

It's a very flawed logic, because beating the best fighters (and I'd say that at this point it was arguable that DLH was better than Williams and Margarito) doesn't gives you an excuse for not fighting the next best fighters. Especially when you choose to fight rubbish instead.

Vargas would definitely do better than Alvarez.

The size of Floyd's opponent is irrelevant. Ask Juan Manuel Marquez and Robert Guerrero. I mean, is a prime Vargas really any better than Victor Ortiz, Ricky Hatton or Marcos Maidana? Of course not! Plus he's bigger which as any boxing fan knows makes him lose to Floyd Mayweather!!!

Vargas would ponderously approach because of the power Floyd displayed at 154. If he got brave enough to punch he get countered and floored just like Diego Corrales because it's basically the same fight. I'd rather see Floyd fight Khalid Rahilou and defend against Ross "The Boss" Thompson.

Alvarez and De La Hoya are as big as Vargas. Size difference is only relevant if abilities are close. They are not. Floyd is a far superior fighter.

Secondly, styles. Whenever Oscar got the fight into the middle of the ring he thoroughly outboxed Vargas. Trinidad outboxed Vargas. Wright outboxed Vargas. You don't think Mayweather's going to outbox Vargas?

I'm not sure Vargas even has a longer reach than Mayweather and the speed gap is huge.

Umm, Tito and Oscar also knocked Vargas TFO. The threat of that happening had a lot to do with how they dealt with Vargas and how Vargas approached them. And DLH is obviously not as naturally big and strong as Vargas nor was he a physical fighter.

Canelo doesn't pressure. Canelo is a "ponderous counter puncher". The way Hut describes Vargas is a perfect description of Canelo and since they don't fight alike it shows you what a poopy head he is.

Vargas isn't completely invulnerable to PBF's punches but in practical terms he's going to walk right up to Floyd and let loose with heavy hands and he's not going to stop because he misses or gets slapped with a counter. He's not going to gas out either or slow down like Cotto or Maidana because he's not posing and feinting like Cotto or exerting real effort to muscle PBF when he gets close. All Vargas really needs to do is throw stiff middleweight jabs until he backs Floyd to the ropes and punch.

Sure, Floyd was past prime when he fought Maidana but Vargas is simply a much bigger, better version. The only evidence of Floyd having foot speed and vitality to maintain distance and limit contact to the extreme he'd need to win at these higher weights is the Canelo fight, and Canelo was custom made for Floyd.

people weren't saying Canelo was custom made for Floyd before their fight. Vargas is more custom made for Floyd than Canelo is being slower and less fluid.

Custom made is a stretch but many of us called it exactly as it went down.

98-00 Vargas was a much better fighter than that spurt fighting Ginger.

I'll be honest, when they first started to promoting Canelo I was like "so is he supposed to be really good, or something?". I was never impressed and I never really got it. Still don't.

His coming out party was barely beating some guy named Trout so I still don't know how him and PBF became a super fight. Then he barely got past Lara. He's not a bad fighter but he's always seemed like a manufactured star to me.

Canelo is more fluid with his hands but his feet are cement. He tries to be a walking turret like Tito except he's a midget, he doesn't hit that hard, he doesn't throw a lot of punches, and he fades late. He has slow feet and doesn't know or didn't know how to cut off the ring. Vargas had very good footwork and he wasn't committed to being set like Canelo. Vargas knew how to cover ground and cut off the ring.
