Henry Cooper labelled Patterson the hardest hitter he faced in all his career. Since even you agree Johansson was a legitimate power-hitter, what do you make of Cooper's words? He has no ostensible reason to lie.

I dont take anything like that seriously

fighters say shit like that all the time, really

Archie Moore got the shit kicked out of him numerous times by Ezzard Charles and lost every fight he had against him

In his autobiography, he talks endlessly about numerous opponents and fawns all over the excellent Lloyd Marshall as far and away his greatest opponent... he beat Marshall 2 out of 2!
The name "Ezzard Charles" is never mentioned in the book... not even ONCE

I also never said I thought Johansson was a great puncher... he had a right hand, it worked on Patterson and Machen but he was hardly a killer, he had a very good right hand... With Ingo's level of opposition, Earnie Shavers would have had 26 KOs, not 17... THAT is a puncher extraordinare

You won't answer me as to what reason Cooper could have to lie, though?

I guess I'll take his words over yours on Patterson's punch, this time. Forgive me. It's not like he was the only man to support Patterson's under-rated power, & the footage is fine & dandy with me to boot.

Patterson could hit, & Johansson had a world-class right hand (much the same as Morrison had a world-class left hook).

Perhaps he disliked johansson? There's a million variables

Check the footage of Patterson against Ellis, Quarry and Chuvalo... Then watch Joe Frazier against same... That's the difference between a heavy duty puncher and a guy with a solid punch

Youre just going out of your way to discredit Cooper now. Id be surprised if you could find one rival of Pattersons who refuted Coopers assertion Patterson could crack.

    Whatever, man

Seriously in 20 plus years of following the sport and it's history, you are absolutely the first guy I have ever talked to who labelled Floyd Patterson as a Big puncher

Jimmy Ellis gets knocked cold in their fight if Patterson is a big puncher ... He wasn't ...

You must also notice that is a fighter catches his opponent with a perfect punch (as Patterson did against Cooper), then naturally this opponent will have a different opinion about his power compared to most who have been hit by the same guy.

Also, as cdogg pointed out, fighters don't necessarily lie in this kind pf questions but for some reason they give answers that are really difficult to believe (for example Tyson claimed that the two best guys he fought were Quick Tillis and Jesse Ferguson before Douglas or anyone). So even though Tyson doesn't have a reason to lie, it sounds odd. Also, I have gotten the impression that Cooper didn't accept the fact that Ingo became the world champ, which he never could.

I think the better way to decide how powerful someone is is to watch how they did in several fights. I think it is obvious Floyd was a sharp and good puncher but not particularly hard.

I would not for a minute suggest he could hit on a level of Frazier, but someone with hands as fast as Patterson is always gonna have their power somewhat over-looked. I would be more inclined to see CDogg's contention if he could find one Patterson opponent who would object to the notion he was a pretty handy puncher. I guarantee he cannot.

agREED. This "Patterson is a big puncher" notion is new to me as well and I've been a fan since the 70's.

Patterson could hit a bit, but to label him as a big puncher is inaccurate.

The issue was not if he was a handy puncher

I said he was clearly not a big puncher

That was what you objected to
