I'll watch it in the theater simply because it can't be worse than the Broderick one.

I liked Ultraman as a kid, but was never a fan of Godzilla vs Mothra or other 'villain' giant monster movies. I might watch it though and who knows? maybe I'll like it.

Saw it this afternoon. I'm a little conflicted I guess, because I had really high hopes for this based on the reviews I read and ultimately ended up a little disappointed, then I think to myself, It's a fucking "Godzilla" movie...WTF was I expecting.

I will say this. The creators certainly honored the spirit of "Godzilla", and I think did well by the Japanese originators of the franchise. It's about 1000 times better then that "Godzilla Takes Manhattan" abomination with Matthew Jessica Broderick...or anything else that Roland Emmerich or Michael Bay can throw at us.

The way the action was shot, was thoughtful and convincing. It had a more "Cloverfield" vibe to it, but without the handheld aspect to it. The scene in the trailer with the soldiers jumping out of the plane was the most beautifully shot scene in the film. Perspective was handled very well, compared to most films of this nature. Actions had consequence in this film also. When a building was demolished and thousands of people were killed in an instant, you knew it, unlike most Superhero/Villain/Disaster destroys a metropolis movie. This is a very serious movie. There are no quips, one-liners or comedic relief. There is nothing funny about what is going on here. :nono:

It's also, not a non-stop action movie. Don't go in expecting this. There are sometimes long lulls of not much happening between the action, and the action that does take place are not usually interminably long action sequences. They build up the tension a bit, get to the action and then move on.

The negatives. We actually have an exceptional group of actors here, but the dialogue they are given is pretty rote. Much of it could have very well been lifted from every other Godzilla movie ever made, for all I know. The actors did their best, and emoted like hell when given the chance, but weren't given much to work with on that front.

For the genre, it was an exceptional movie. I will say, I think it was probably a better movie then "Pacific Rim", the acting especially was far better (with the exception of Idris Elba), but I think I actually enjoyed "Pacific Rim" more, if I'm being honest.

    7.5/10

Godzilla (2014) Watched it yesterday and was very disappointed. My main beef is that a movie titled 'Godzilla' barely has much screen time of it's titular character. The other two monsters dominated the screen while the giant lizard dude spends most of the movie swimming. The damn trailers were SOOO deceiving. The main character here is the Kick-Ass actor, not Water White. It is all about him and how he always somehow gets in the middle of the action while accomplishing NOTHING. The plot was muddled and the editing didn't help. I mean, when we FINALLY see Godzilla charging toward the monsters for battle...the camera then cuts to Kick-Ass spitting some uninteresting dialogue for a few minutes. The actors were wasted in uninteresting roles. The monster mash, when the director finally decides to give it a greenlight is entertaining and corny at the same time. The movie reminded me Cloverfield a lot, without the shaky camera, but with the focus on the humans, not the monster itself. The much vilified Bueller version at least had plot that made sense, characters that weren't one dimensional and its hero ultimately stick to a plan that worked. Kick-Ass had no plan, had to be saved a few times and we couldn't give two shits about him or his wife. The level of destruction here makes the ones from 'Man of Steel' look small. Can we pretend that all those city blocks of buildings were empty and there weren't casualties? At the end people cheered for Godzilla 'the savior of the city' like this giant monster was Spiderman or IronMan regardless of the devastation he and his wrestling buddies caused, 9-11 style. 5/10

Sounds like a good thorough review. Good job dude. I tend to disagree with you on movies a lot but here you seem to hit a lot of negative points I also hate about films so we'll see. I think I'm going to agree with you on this one.
