I am sure the knowledge of that made his opponent's pain easier to take

The point is that it was what made Oscar a one-handed fighter, just like it made Winky a one handed fighter. Neither of them had a cross/straight or lead uppercut that was worth a damn. Any decent fighter can sacrifice one hand to have a good jab.

Hagler was more ambidextrous than most fighters. His cross may have suffered from the stance that he fought in (some here have called it "weak"), but it was still leagues beyond what guys like Winky or Oscar could throw.

    Irrelevant though...as UGO suggested.

A good jab is a good jab. Who cares what the origins of its strength is? That's for another discussion. Right now we are comparing the punches of Leonard and Oscar.

It made his right hand easier to take, which probably DQs him from this debate.

    I'd go with Leonard here.

Well, the initial discussion was about power.. the jab isn't really a power punch, so that topic in and of itself is irrelevant. Nevertheless, if the entire punch arsenal of one hand is sacrificed for the sake of the jab, I would say that matters.

At the end of the day, I don't think anyone would dispute that Leonard hit harder at their respective NATURAL weights.

I rate Leonard p4p #1 all time. I hated dlh and only can tolerate him now because he promotes fights and is giving back to the sport.

DLH 140 and under hit significantly harder than Leonard. DLH blasted away bums and decent fighters on his way up. Leonard--not so much. DLH would get rid of guys as soon as he landed. Leonard rarely did this. Leonard got his ko's because he was a great fighter who could land punches against high level fighters, not because he was really hard puncher.

Who hit harder at 147? Who cares. If you want to say Leonard hit harder at 147 go for it. P4P, though, dlh was a harder puncher.

Oh, as far as Leonard beating dlh 10/10 times. No fucking way. Leonard lost to that little bitch duran fair and square. There's no way he's running a 10 fight table with dlh.

    Why do you still menstruate?

Dlh beats Whitaker, Tito, and Quartey, but has no chance against Leonard who lost to Duran, maybe Hagler, Hearns, almost Hearns again? It's just 80's lickfest bullshit. Leonard wasn't unbeatable. People who speak in absolutes just show that their iq's are not so high. We've got several people who fit that description around here, although I haven't noticed you being one of them.

Leonard hit harder, period. Leonard was hitting hard enough at 160 to have Hagler thinking twice.

I think Leonard hit harder as well but i don't believe his power had Hagler bothered at all.

    Exactly!

Hagler would have stood in mid ring, and literally laughed at Oscar's punches.

Hagler seemed pensive that night, too pensive. Ray had something to do with that- and Ray had something to do with that, I presume. As X has stated, Hagler wouldn't have given the mother of all flying fucks for Oscars power at 160.

Agreed. More likely didn't lead that openly because Leonard stole points with quick shots and moved away so effectively that going forwards without calculating would have benefit Ray more. If Hearns nor Mugabi could make Hagler gun-shy, I don't think Ray did either

Leonard speed and movement bothered Hagler most of all. I'm not saying that Ray didn't land some hard shots but it wasn't what Marvin was having the trouble with.

Leonard asked for the fight to be shortened to 12 rounds and a giant ring for a reason. Shoeshine and move.

I don't think Hopkins gave a shit about Oscar's power either but it's not as if because somebody is not a big puncher you can simply walk over them without any regards to defense. If that was the case a guy like Paulie Malinaggi wouldn't have a single victory.

"Bothered" is probably too strong a word. But I'm POSITIVE that Ray hit harder than Hagler THOUGHT he would. Not hard enough to hurt Hagler the way Hearns did, but hard enough to make him pause and probably say to himself "Damn, I didn't think his bitch ass would hit this hard."

I can see that. Could be kind of similar to how Ali's opponents felt.

yeah, that must be the criteria... has nothing to do with Leonard knocking out far better opposition at 147 than Hoya managed... who's his best KO there? Oba Carr?

IMO.. A much as I hated on dlh..I also aknoledge how good he was...

That said.. I honestly think Srl has become underrated.. SrL is an all time great

(mini Ali) was in ever way better that dlh... One thing I love is that SrL has the boxing ability to be a pure boxer but he had the mentality to go out and STRETCH PEOPLE... he liked to fight..

I agree with this. There was a point in the fight - I don't remember when - where Leonard fights his way out of a corner & Hagler seemed a bit surprised by the snap on his punches. Not hurt or anything remotely close to it, but exactly as you said, there was more power there than Hagler had expected.

Good post. There's not much reason to think DLH was the harder puncher.

LEONARD by a lot. Leonard, the faggot, aka Gay Ray Leotard was a runner. He ran from people and then hit them in flurries. Oscar had a higher kayo percentage, but Gayness was a runner. Oscar most of the time walked people down, often ineffectively. the fact that gayness HAD ONLY about a 4% inferiority in the kayo percentage speaks volumes. If Oscar fought like Gay Ray, he'd have a kayo ratio of 25%. Just as an aside, I bet you Gay Ray has sucked a higher percentage of cocks than Oscar and has superior stats in lines of cocaine consumed. My screen name should be prophet. I told you guys near a decade ago that Ray was a legitimate homo and he has admitted it.

Just for the record, Floyd Mayweather is also a practicing skin flute wizard.

    Duran comment butthurts, doesn't it?

    You want to debate, debate.

People confuse punching power with offensive capability. Punching power is often demonstrated best against lesser competition because all quality fighters are landing on these guys and the fighter getting rid of them sooner is the guy hitting them harder. No, it's not always conclusive, but it's a hell of a lot better start than 'but he had Hagler respecting him!' That's just retarded. Anyone with any modicum of skill doesn't like to get hit by any other pro boxer.

So dlh was bigger than his opponents. He was also making weight month after month after month so I really doubt he was blowing up too much between fights. And what was the result? Quick ko after quick ko. He was hitting these guys and they were crumbling.

At 140 and under (which is what I clarified I meant), Oscar went 22-0 (19) and the only bum who went the distance with him was down twice and had another standing 8 count. He had 4 1st round ko's, 5 2nd round ko's, 2 3rd round ko's, and 5 4th round ko's.

    Leonard, otoh, over his first 22 fights went 22-0 (13). He had 2 1st rd ko's, 1 2nd rd ko, 2 3rd rd ko's, and 0 4th rd ko's.

Oh yeah. Oscar's competition was better, too. In other words, it's not really close. Oscar hit harder p4p.

"But waaaahhhh Leonard beat Hagler and Hearns!!!" Yeah, because he was a great fighter. Different topic. It's just a different version of the same dipshits who bring up Ali when the hardest punching heavyweights are brought up.
