R2: Paul's workrate is beginning to take over. He landed crisper combos this round. He snapped Winky's head back with an uppercut with 30 seconds to go. Definitely Paul's round. 19-19
Winky looked like Trinidad in his fight against him: totally unable to do anything. Took a beating there in the second round.
R3: Paul is still coming with the volume punches. Wright went into a defensive shell in the middle of the round. The punches in round 3 seemed less effective but Paul wins the round on volume punching. Winky looks to be trying to set up a right hook (he landed a nice one in each of the first 2 rounds). 29-28 Williams
Ledderman has it 3-0 Williams as does Steward. Lampley thought Wright won round 1 (as I did) and Merchant thought it was even.
R4: Better round for Winky but he didn't throw enough punches. He had a decent combo midway through the round. Winky's corner is screaming at the ref that Paul is holding and hitting. They're also telling Winky that Williams is wearing himself out. 39-37 Williams
That´s why we love Winky, bitches for two years about not getting fights and now he has already given up after four rounds, not throwing anything. ::::
R5: Close round. Williams was 16 of 81 landed. Wright was 9 of 42 landed. Wright was more effective and made Paul miss a lot while standing right in front of him.Winky is picking up some momentum. 48-47 Williams
Merchant and Lampley combine for the one millionth Holyfield-Douglas/uppercut from long range reference.
R6: Williams round. Winky landed another nice right hook. Other than that, Williams showed good defense and was more effective. Paul's workrate is still controlling the fight. 58-56 Williams
Fight a lot closer than announcer are saying. 2 rounds back Winky ripped about 20 body shots off with no mention by the announcers. wtf?
R7: Same old, same old. Paul throwing and landing more punches. Winky having moments here and there but not enough to win rounds. 68-65 Williams R8: Williams cranking the right hook, keeping up the non-stop punching. Winky standing his ground but beaing beaten to the punch. Winky still landing right hooks but just not enough to take the rounds. 78-74 Williams
Turn the volume off and put in a good CD and judge for yourself, when you go to the fights live you don't hear commentary.
R8: Williams landed some effective combinations that had Winky off balance but not really hurt. He's outlanding Winky 3-1 maybe 4-1 at this point. Overwhelming him with punches. 88-83 Williams
R10: Winky looks very discouraged. Still throwing punches but not nearly enough. His corner tells him after round 10 that he needs a stoppage to win. Paul is still bouncing on his toes throwing punches from every angle. He still hasn't slowed down. 98-92 Williams
R11: Same thing. Williams throwing and landing more punches and takking the round. 108-101 Williams Wright has landed 108 punches landing at 30%. Williams has landed 217 punches landing at 25%.
Easy win for Williams. He looked sharp against a shot Wright. Winky must stay retired for his own good.
R12: Paul closes strongly as to emphasize he's not tired and not slowing down. Chases Winky into the corner at the end of the round. My scorecard: 118-110 Williams
Official scores: 119-109 119-109 120-108 Paul Williams, unanimous decision. Wright has had a great career. The first time I saw him was in the mid 90s when he unsuccessfully challenged Julio Cesar Vasquez for the WBA junior middleweight title. I've enjoyed his big fights against Vargas, Mosley, Trinidad, Hopkins, Taylor, and others. He is probably finished as a serious title contender now.
