Shane ruined Cotto. Gomez has a great shot at the upset.

Since gomez has about 0% chance of

winning, i'll call a buster douglas and take gomez winning by ko in the 5th round.

Gomez does have some skills but i think his lack of power is his biggest problem in this fight. Cotto will just walk thru him.

Cotto is taking a gimme and he is entitled. This thread highlights the nice thing about a gimme.... there is always a chance, however how remote, of an upset. Though with Gomez whats his gimmick? Does he outbox Cotto?

I like Alfonso allot, I think he's got great skills and great heart....but he doesn't have the physical gifts to go with them and at the elite level you need all three. Cotto's gonna win, but Gomez will make it competitive. I just hope he doesn't cop too bad a beating in the process

I hope your right LOK, Gomez is one of my favourites, id love to see him win a world title. But I think the disparity in strength and power is gonna be slightly too much in this one.

    I agree with you Hut.

Gomez is not a complete bum, he DOES have skill and heart, but like you said, he just doesn't have the supreme talent and physical gifts that most fighters on the world stage possess.

Cotto is a proven elite fighter, so Gomez is going to take a brutal arse kicking.

I do think he'll last a few rounds though, and at least be halfway competitive until Cotto starts to grind him down.

none. And I said that Campbell had a legit shot against Diaz. That was a 60-40 fight going in in favour of Juan. This fight is 97-3 for Cotto. So, technically, he does have a chance because if Buster Douglas could do it... but realistically speaking, he will get beaten down pretty badly.

Yeah, I mean with some of the other fights (Quintana-Williams, Campbell-Diaz) where these threads were brought up there were some real question marks about how those young fighters would do against that style...something they didn't have a lot of experience with.

Cotto's further along in his career than either of them, and appears to be significnatly better than either. Plus, Gomez isn't really bringing the kind of style that needs to be figured out.

His only real chance seems to me to be if he just completely absorbs Cotto's punches and significantly outworks him...and Cotto comes in less than his best condition.

That has been my point for a while.

People forget that Gomez is used to taking punches from guys at jr. middleweight and even over that limit.

I think he is going to be more durable - and relentless - than many give him credit for.

I think it will actually be later in the fight that he makes Cotto work hard and have to rely on his boxing skills and superior speed to take the decision or a late stoppage.

That, combined with Cotto potentially 'going through the motions' a bit in this one (which he is apt to do) will lead to a more competitive exciting fight, I think.

    Peace.

Maybe Gomez will hit Cotto with a "buzzer" that makes him do the chop chop hoola, and he begins to...as Illuminati puts it, "protect his lead" for the next 11 rounds...:crafty: .

A pity that Shane is fighting an even worse opponent than Cotto, Margarito seems to be the only welterweight out there willing to fight someone with a pulse.

Yeah, guys like Golden Johnson certainly represent the most ferocious and tough fighters the welterweight division has to offer.
