Get the fuck outta here, I'll take the stick for "there" but you can fuck right off with idiots. This is a boxing forum not a grammar test.

Relax man. Just thought it was ironic that you chose to call people idiots when you're clearly not sharpest mick in the world.

That's true enough, BUT, that doesn't have anything to do with the fight not selling well, does it?

The fight isn't happening in Wales because Hopkins wouldn't travel. He never has. He has fought abroad, like, TWICE in his whole career.

Whilst we are on the subject, don't you think that Hopkins might well get the benefit of any doubt on Saturday? OF course he will. It's called 'home advantage'. Every fighter gets it. You just make it sound like Joe is the only one who ever has...

I agree. But, I also feel the fight is happening here because Calzaghe wants it here. He sounds sincere enough when he says he wanted to fight in the US before his career was over, and if he wins he'll have the added bonus of being able to tell people he won in Bhop's backyard.

Picking guys up on such errors is silly and a sign of losing the debate within the thread.

I agree with Fade To Black, I think Joe wanted to fight in the states, but I would also assume that Joe knew B-Hop would never travel. So it was a no brainer for team Calzaghe.

Usually, not always. It's a matter of preference, generally...

Anyone know how they pick the venues for these fights? Is it just whichever site bids the highest?

I was in Vegas two weekends ago, and I stayed at Paris which is right next to Planet Hollywood. I know I'm reaching a bit here, but I wasn't overly impressed with PH and maybe that has something to do with sales.

This much is very true. You could see how much Joe realized what he had missed when he was with Hatton during the build up to the Mayweather fight.

Again, though, there was always the danger that the ticket sales might bomb. The Kessler-Calz fight apparently didn't do great numbers Stateside, and Hops, despite his skills, is as boring as hell.

Bad business acumen by PH. No doubt 'bout it.

If him and Calzaghe didn't talk so much shit i wouldn't be interested in this fight at all. Im a sucker really because it will be the same old Hopkins throwing 20 punches per round and stinking out the joint.

Sure they would have sold 80,000 but the Casino money means they will still get paid more money even with the shitty tickets sales.

The fight didn't take place in wales

because Calzaghe knew to make it as an all-time great, he has to win and get it done, in the united states.

I think he must pronounce it "Cal-zage". Like Sage the herb.

Which is odd, because every commentator for his fights pronounces it "Cal-za-gee"

shit, i'd be in vegas right now if i didnt have class tomorrow.

i dont expect hopkins to be in any exciting fights, but nevertheless, this is a fight between two all-time greats.

i'm very curious to see who comes out on top.

The US fight fan is far more jaded than most in the world. Before we plop down $1500 for seats we want to know that the fight promises to be entertaining or just a big event (i.e. Mayweather-Oscar).

This is completely counter to British fans that flock to see their heroes regardless of the opponent put in front of them. Calzaghe fans didn't care that he was a 9-1 favorite to destroy Manfredo as they filled Millennium Stadium to watch him. They simply wanted to see their guy in action.

That being said, the fact that this fight wasn't sold as a PPV event indicates that no one expected it to be a huge draw. US fans know little of Calzaghe and they know too much about Hopkins and his typically boring style. It just wasn't going to sell tickets in Vegas.

And, as my boy Dsimon indicated, it's really sad that this fight doesn't have more appeal because it is seriously a monumental fight in terms of matching-up two guys that dominated their weight class during their era better than almost anyone else in boxing history. Seriously, when have two fighters met that have the combined number of title fights and/or string of defenses like Calzaghe and Hopkins? Never.

Repeatedly coming in with your head to butt your opponents isn't merely rough, it's dirty.

Repeatedly hitting your opponent low, when the ref is on the other side, isn't just fighting rough. It's dirty.

Echols didn't throw Hopkins to the floor because it was getting too rough. Hopkins rabbit punched him, just as he had with a big brutal one in the 2nd round of that fight.

Hopkins is dirty. He's a great fighter, but if he's not dirty, then neither is Joel Casamayor.
