Genuinely cannot see why this is a controversial viewpoint. Tito was a world-class fighter fo' sure, but at 147 and possibly 154. There is nothing in his 'campaign' at 160 to show the same can be said at 160. If beating William Joppy at 160 proves you are the goods, then I'll hold my hands up. It's just that I always thought Joppy was not that good.

Also MTF, I believe that a fight can take a lot out of a fighter, especially when he's embarrassed after being a heavy favourite. So hindsight might be a benefit in certain cases, in other cases it is just using the rest of a given fighter's career to belittle a win that might be the very explanation to the lack of significant accomplishment after that fight. That's why I prefer to rely on the context in which a fight happened to evaluate it's significance.

The question was how far up could Tito go and him blasting out Joppy gave hope that he could be just as good at mw. But now that it's all over all Tito did at mw was knock out Joppy and some French nobody. All that really proved was that above average fighters that can't avoid his punches would get knocked out.

Looking at it objectively and logically you would expect Tito to be better when he was younger and fresher against guys his own size and it's weird that the older Hopkins beat the HOF welter a lot easier and more impressively than the younger Hopkins beat average middles like Echols, Allen, Vanderpool, Eastman etc. Losing to Taylor, who most likely gets ktfo by Tito kinda seals the deal.

Trinidad was a very dangerous mw and a very good win regardless, but he wasn't a true mw. And you can't ignore that and still be fair and objective when you talk about Hopkins career.

 

That's fine, but it is pretty subjective and I know quite a few souls here who don't subscribe to the thing you subscribe to here.

If Tito wasn't a legitimate Middleweight challenge for Hopkins then neither was Hearns for Hagler. Hearns, like Tito, has his greatest successes at the lower weights. Shiiiiiit hearns even lost to barkley at 160lbs, if we want facts.

#Joppy was a very average fighter at 160 and lost to Julio Cesar Green.

His best win is over the likes of Howard Eastman and a totally shot Duran.

 

He beat Green clearly every time he fought him. Joppy should've been undefeated. He was better than guys like Robert Allen and Antwun Echols who were Hopkins most notable opponents before Tito. Also it was common knowledge that Keith Holmes was scared of Joppy. Holmes lost to fucking Hacine Cherifi which shows how weak the division was.

 

Joppy was robbed something serious in that fight with Green.

Be that as it may, I agree he was not elite. A decent fighter, nothing more.

After giving both Hopkins vs Mercado fights a rewatch, I'm even more convinced that a prime Hagler beats prime Hopkins at their respective bests.

Hagler would be too strong on the inside for Hopkins and he had the quickness in his hands to reach him from the outside, particularly with that southpaw jab.
