I am firmly seated on the "boxing is alive and kicking" bandwagon.

Especially in Europe, I swear it's picked up steam in the last few years.

HOWEVER - one thing I kind of agree with hanzy on is the safety first thing.

This is something even my girlfriend noticed from watching fights with me. Most fighters, not all, but a lot of them, in the 70's and 80's and before, fought to win.

It seems like too many fucking fighters fight "not to lose" today. Fighters like morales, pacman, corrales etc are the exceptions today, just warriors who fight anyone and go out there and jsut FIGHT, and fight to win, not carefully try and potshot their way to another payday.

On one hand I think boxers are more deserving of higher paydays than any other athlete in the world, on the other hand perhaps they are being paid just a tad too much at world level, and become greedy and too money hungry.

It's partly that so much gravitas is placed on an undefeated record, or winning streak, and a loss is terrible for a fighter. I think that attitude in modern boxing has helped to cultivate the safety first fighter.

I can see Hanzy some decades back... "Pep ain't shit! he'll be forgotten in 20 years! Nobody will care about his boring 0 punches a round shit! What kind of pussy does that? He'll be KO'ed eventually and forgotten. He's killing the sport!".

Exactly. They're so obsessed with keeping their crappy undefeated records so they fight safety-first and somehow on this board that translates into unbelieveable boxing skill. F*ckin' retarded.

We ain't talking decades back in a time when boxing was the biggest sport in the world. We're talking here and now. And if you read mexican wedding shirt's post, that pretty much summarizes my views. Fighters being paid millions of dollars to fight in an effort not to lose. Amazing that people actually appreciate garbage like this. Lewis was torn a new asshole by everybody save the Lewis fans for the way he went about fighting Tua. That same admonishment should be directed at all these millionaire jokes who fight safety-first.

I would hardly call what floyd does as exclusively "safety first". Cory Spinks is SAFETY FIRST, but Floyd actually engages his opponents and tries to hurt them...just his defense is exceedingly good as well as his ring generalship that it FRUSTRATES his "haters" when he's never in harms way.

There were a few points in the De La Hoya fight when Floyd was engaging Oscar, and was even the one who was advancing.

Even in the Baldomir fight, Floyd was beating the hell out of him, until he decided late to save his hand/shoulder/arm whatever.

But Floyd in the Ndou, Gatti, Mitchell, Judah, Soza, Corrales fights was NOT a saftey first "boring" fighter.

As someone already mentioned in this thread, Hanzy, you are out of your element when trying to discuss a serious topic, espcially boxing-related.

Stick to photoshop, talking about dicks, and following some pretty lady around a tree singing some song with your hairy ass.:kick:

Aren't you the whining little sh*t who ran away for a few months cause you had your feelings hurt? Then you came back in time for Floyd/Oscar? Why are you still here? Cause there's still some black men left in boxing?

Floyd Jr is the beginning of the end of professional boxing. The sooner he's eliminated, the better for the sport. Anybody notice that Floyd Jr threads began when almost every other superstar faded out?
Trinidad, Tyson, Lewis, Roy, Mosley, etc. The last boxer whom fans even bother discussing is Floyd Jr and only because of his unblemished record. Once that '0' is gone, it's gonna hit the boxing world like an atomic bomb.

Like Hatton says, "I haven't met anyone in the US who has a good word to say about him".

Being liked isn't a pre-requisite in any walk of life, but being so disrespectful to the point of no-one liking you....well, that's just fucking ignorant and arrogant.

The funny thing is, Floyd comes across pretty cool when he's alone. This is sort of a young Tyson thing going on. When you're surrounded by thugs and rappers, it transforms you into something you're not. Floyd is a good boy, a nice lad. His parenting and his crackhead jailbird uncles and father are the ones who've f*cked him up.
Where do you see Floyd Jr in 15 years time with the way he handles money?

Doesn't matter, he's THE BEST and that's all that matters. He's a superstar whether people like him personally or not and he'll continute to prove his stardom with the PPV numbers he generates without the help of Oscar De La Hoya in the opposite corner.

No - what you're missing is that there have been plenty of sporting superstars in the past who havent been liked by everyone (usually the general public) ...Mayweather's own shitty brand of arrogance and attitude (which repells the public and his peers) are pretty unique.

Great, if you like that sort of thing. :bears:

I could say something quite apt and completely justifiable here....but I have decided against it on this occassion.

I'm not a fan of the man, I'm a fan of the fighter.

    Same with Leonard.
    Same with Tyson.

Who cares about his "shitty attitude"? We pay to watch him display his incredible skills in the ring, we're not paying him to lead the youth at Sunday School.

it's funny how many "How great is Floyd" Threads I've seen from Floyd fans. It's like they need to convince themselves that he's great, even they don't believe it and need to hear it from others to be reassured.

    You're totally missing the point.
At some stage, everyone has to take a step back, look at themselves and say "wow, you know what? I really am a jerk of the highest order".

I don't think Mayweather can do that.

What does how Floyd "acts" have to do with how he is rated in terms of in-the-ring accomplishments?

Do we want to talk about how Robinson, Johnson, Greb, Ketchel, and Monzon acted?

I thoroughly dislike how PBF projects himself as a person and what he says/does.

THat's got no bearing on his ranking; or on his perceived/actual style IN THE RING.

    Peace.
