Are you KIDDING ME??? He asked him TWICE! millisecond, my ass. go watch it again

    "Are you Okay???"

    "ARE YOU OKAY????"

    nothing

    FIGHT OVER

Richard Steele's job is to protect the fighter, he is not a timekeeper... it doesn't matter if you are badly hurt and unresponsive at 2:58 of the first round, or 2:58 of the final round

    Rounds are THREE MINUTES LONG

They are not 2:58... If you can't continue, even for TWO MORE SECONDS, you LOSE

It was a good stoppage, unfortunate for Meldrick, but Steele was absolutely doing his job

This is how Steele asked him - "AREYOUOKAREYOUOK" *millisecond pause* *WAVES OFF THE FIGHT*. Meanwhile Taylor had already nodded and is looking over at Lou Duva, who was screaming his head off like a retard.

The only fighter Richard Steele did a good job of protecting was Chavez.

    Recognize the ref here?

See anything unusual there, vis Chavez/Taylor?

Check out the youtube clip I linked. Hearns was not only absolutely pancaked by that right, he tried to get up and FELL AGAIN, then he got up and was tottering on his feet and incoherent. Steele let him continue.. early in the fight, with time to spare. That was a year and a half BEFORE the Chavez-Taylor fight.

I don't know if Steele was dirty or just incompetent that night, but he was definitely at least one of the two.

Steele could have let Taylor continue and no one would have criticized him for it. He must've known the fight was about to end...and Taylor was an undefeated champion that should have been given the chance to finish especially considering he was obviously ahead on the cards.

    However

It's Taylor's fault, not Steele, for the fight being stopped. Taylor refused to look into Steele's eyes AND refused to answer the question. Instead he looked at his corner (which is usually an indicator that a fighter doesn't want to continue). Also bear in mind that Taylor's face was a swollen and bloody mess...and he stubled a little before getting back on his feet.

So put yourself in Steele's shoes:

Swollen bloody fighter in front of you.
Stumbles to get on his feet.
    Doesn't answer your question
    Looks at his corner instead

In the heat of the moment Steele made the right decision.

I also blame Lou Duva...his antics distracted Taylor.

    it's a strawman

    it's not about Steele

it's about Chavez/Taylor and if the decision is the correct one. It IS the correct one.

The fact that Steele failed to do the right thing in an entirely different bout is irrelevant

It was clearly Duva's fault. He was distracting Taylor some some kind of stupid asshole. He also gave terrible advice going into the 12th

    "You need this round Mel!!!!!11"

Nobody to blame but Taylor. All he had to do was say a single word or nod his head to the ref. What he did was stand there on shakey legs with a blank look on his face.

That's not entirely true...just before Steele waved it off Taylor looked directly at him but before he could say anything Duva catches his attention out of the corner of his eye...he looks over at Duva (who I think was on the ring apron yelling) then Steele waves off the fight.

Taylor reacted as soon as Steele waved off the fight.

Chavez couldn't have made it across the ring in time to throw another punch which is irrelevant. Steele stopped the fight because Taylor looked away, but it's clear he reacted to Duva.

That isnt steele's problem. He has more to worry about than what is distracting Taylor.

Yeah, except Steele could hear Lou Duva yelling just as well as Taylor could, and knew that was why Taylor was looking at his corner. He didn't give Taylor a proper chance to respond.

CDogg - regarding citing Barkley/Hearns and Steele's behavior being a strawman, Steele himself specifically said after the fight that he allowed Hearns to continue because "a championship fighter should be given the benefit of the doubt." If this were a court of law, his prior actions in an even more severe circumstance, and the fact that his later actions directly contradicted his stated philosophy on the matter, would both certainly be admissible and relevant.

Steele fucked up. The referee's job isn't to be timekeeper, but guess what? You don't have to be the fucking timekeeper to be aware of the amount of time left, and if there's any single person in the entire building who should know that aside from the timekeeper.. it's the referee.

Yup Duva's distraction had a great deal to do with it, but Taylor is ultimately responsible for not concentrating on Steele's instructions.

As an aside....I seem to remember Duva's rage when the fight was stopped. I'm surprised he didn't try to throttle Steele there and then.

Taylor is the only one to blame for that, if you want to continue you need to make it known. You need to respond to the ref.

If Marquez beats Pacquiao...then Mayweather breathe a sigh of relief...people won't be screaming at him to stop being a bitch and fight Pacquiao, he will have a victory over Pacquiao by proxy, and all his groupies will use one fight to rank Mayweather over Pacquiao in an all time great list....even though Pac resume and accomplishment still shit all over Mayweather jr.....

His "groupies" will not be happy about that, trust me since I'm the foremost "groupie". We'd want Floyd to be the first to beat this seemingly "invincible" version of Pac.

But yes, we would all of to rank Floyd above Pac without even the slightest hint of a doubt.

Pac accomplishments and resume shit on Mayweather's...so even in a defeat to Marquez...Pacquiao rank better in all time list than Mayweather...

Shit Pacquiao is so ahead of Mayweather that maybe if they fight and Mayweather wins..he will still not over take Pacquiao....Hearns, Leonard, Hagler even in beating Duran are not consider greater in all time list....

Again, I don't know how much more clear I can be about this:

Steele's competency in other fights, his motivations in other fights are not relevant here.

The only thing that is relevant is this fight

Fighter is floored heavily... gets up unsteadily, arms at his sides... he is asked twice if he is okay... he fails to answer, he doesn't nod, he doesn't speak, he doesn't lift up his gloves

A good official, doing what he is supposed to do, stops that fight

It does not matter if it's one second in or 178 seconds in, the first round or the last round...
