I agree. There are differences between now and the late 90's, of course...lack of American heavies is the main thing, the internet boxing people were, on average, bigger fans than they are, far less access to the world scene, come to mind... but what happened in the late 90's is that there became more boxing on tv than a regular fan could watch. That wasn't the case in the earlier 90's. Also, unifications began and have continued. PPV has been up and down, but at least it is available to all...the little dish began to take over and has continued to dominate... there might not be carbajal, lopez, and chiquita now, but there is calderon, donaire, and darchinyan so I'm not really with you on the lower weight thing
No, bullshit if you think otherwise. Get a fucking clue, man. A sport that at its highest levels can only be seen on pay per view for the last 20 years DIES Go for a walk tomorrow and ask 20 random strangers who the heavyweight champion of the world is... if TWO OF THEM can name ONE beltholder, I will eat my hat You're living in fantasy land Get in a time machine and go back to 1975 and ask 20 strangers-- at least 10-15 of 'em will say "Muhammad Ali" Thats the HEAVYWEIGHTS I'm talkin about When I was a kid, EVERYBODY knew who Roberto Duran and Sugar Ray Leonard and Marvelous Marvin Hagler were and they were MIDDLEWEIGHTS and WELTERWEIGHTS, for crying out loud A few years back, a WHITE KID was the UNDISPUTED MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD... a WHITE KID, an AMERICAN WHITE KID If a white American Kid had knocked off Carlos Monzon or Marvin hagler, he would have been on every wheaties box in the country, he would have been on every late night talk show, he would have been among the most famous athletes in the whole country... now, with that in mind, ask 20 STRANGERS "Who's Kelly Pavlik?" ... if ONE knows, I'd be amazed... JUST ONE you're delusional Fucking sport has been dying steadily for 20 years Young kids in the streets aren't boxing, they are playing basketball and football, and there are guns where there used to be knives... you're out to lunch if you think the talent pool hasn't nearly evaporated Why do you think older and older fighters are still relevant to the scene? Because there's no replacements
600 Million people world wide watched ALI/SHAVERS 600 Million If you took the 5 best possible matchups in boxing right now and put them on the same card on FREE TV, you wouldnt get that number
That said, when a fight is great, its the best thing ever which is why I will always watch But anybody who thinks the average fighter is as talented now as they were even as recently as 15 years ago is delusional
When I was a kid, they would play old fights and sometimes live ones "Moorer/Shultz comes to mind". The Sport needs something like that and Free. Ali was one the biggest athletes ever. Even Hearns and SRL had huge mainstream appeal. People cared and thought of them as the best athletes in the world which they of course were. Even then, the infrastructure was bad, but it was top notch compared to today.
U Make VALID Points, CDoggy Dogg, but Boxing has ALWAYS had RELEVANT Old Fart Fighters Around...Jearsey Joe Walcott, Archie Moore, Antonio Cervantes, Roberto Duran & George Foreman just to Name a Few...ALL of them had GREAT Success in their LATE 30's &/or 40's DECADES PRIOR to the Current Era of Prizefighting... Fuuuuuurthermore, w/the Exception of the NFL, NO American Sport is Really FLOURISHING like it Did in Years Past...N General, People have MORE To Do; MORE Viewing Options...Back in the Days BEFORE Cable, Satellite T.V., Several HUNDRED Channels to Choose From & SPECIALIZED Reality Shows, People Generally Watched SPORTS on Television.... But Times have Changed & like REED Said, Pretty Much EVERY American Sport has Seen a DECLINE in their Veiwership & Fandom EXCEPT for the NFL... The PPV #'s Argue AGAINST Boxing Being on Life Support, Dog...Floyd Mayweather, 1 of THE Most UNLIKEABLE Fighters in HISTORY, a Guy that Really DOESN'T have a Fan-Friendly (Mainstream) Style JUST Did a MILLION PPV Buys Against a Blown Up, Piss Drinking Lightweight!!... An Asian Guy that BARELY Spoke a Word of English 10 Years Ago, that BEGAN his Career @ 106 lbs is Now THE Most Popular Guy in ALL of Boxing...A-List Celebrities Attend ALL of his Bouts...He's on the Cover of Time Magazine...AND he Did MORE than 1 MILLION PPY Buys in his Last Bout... Yet Boxing is "Dying"???... REED:dunno:
First of all I understood the 'spirit' of your post all too well. One of pompous, didactic negativity in common with 95% of your posts. Of course I recognized the distinction between the business and the in ring action. My dog was busy eating scrambled egg out my hand and he picked it up. The point is there are many ways you could have communicated your (reasonable) feeling of conflict on that and, as per usual, the way you chose was to say you hate the whole thing and make your enjoyment of the in ring action the proviso rather than the other way round. And true to my earlier commentary on you from a couple weeks ago, your only reply is to call me stupid as if that proves your self alleged intelligence. Anyway, tell you what man, since your this remarkable intelligence of yours (that you keep so jealously guarded that it never sees the light of day here) is such an obsession of yours why don't we both go take the BBC IQ test (legit accurate test), copy & paste our results page and we'll see how smart you are. I got 10 bucks on paypal waiting for you if you beat me. I believe I got 128 last year, and about 131 the year before that which was in the top 10-15% of the general population. I'm sure a man of your formidable intellect won't have any problems beating me, collecting your pocket money and kudos.
You are dumb. How about we hear more about how light planes are dummy. You can't even tell the difference between the fights and "boxing" the politics. ::::I am supposed to take a copy and past challenge with you. Every post I have directed at you has been a lesson in superiority of intellect. I suggest you keep quiet or end up admitting you were wrong in the 911 thread again. How old are you? You were shocked to learn the difference between "your" and "you're":::: I am not taking online shit. I will take a legitimate test that is timed as I would in a real academic setting. Not some bullshit test that you can take 50 times and then say look, I got 100%. ::::If we were to take in person though, i WOULD GIVE YOU THE FIRST BIT OF dental work you ever had , dummy.
'You're dumb.....blah blah.....I'm smart.....blah blah.....you're dumb......I'm smart.......blah blah.....I won't take a test......blah blah......I'm smart.......blah blah,....you're dumb'. You're a broken record dude. Tell you what, regardless of my score, why don't you just take the test and post your results? Go take it now, post the results page in 20 minutes from now and if you get above 120 I'll send you your $10 anyway and change my signature to 'Free Ike is really smart' for a month. http://www.bbc.co.uk/testthenation/
So who took Pavlik's titles a "few years back" You should at least follow boxing if you're going to rant about it like this. Pavlik is STILL the MW Champ.
LOL@ at your threat of physical violence from the other side of the atlantic ocean, BTW Ike. Nice stuff. Another impressive display of your formidable intellectual prowess. What are you 13?
Wow, an imbecile calling me smart. What a reward. I just want you to smarten up. You may think I am being a bully, but you will thank me later. I think with my online school of education one day you may be able to pick up spilled urine samples in a free clinic someday. I would be proud if someone of your lowly intellectual origins were able to maximize his powers. What threat of violence? I am able to do free dental work. I was just reaching out to an old dumb friend.
Ok, cool. I'll thank you for your concern, Ike, and be on my way. This E-shtick of yours is just too damn boring to deal with. As I said a while back, I'd consider coming up with a new one since it's fairly obvious the inherent tension in living up to a self concept so far beyond your capabilities is probably half the reason you're such a wretched, miserable prick. There are quite a few exceptionally smart guys on this board. Pig, rooster, cdogg, etc. When one of those guys calls me stupid I'll pay attention. You're probably about 30 IQ points below any of them as I'm sure is apparent to 95% of the board. But hey, if you keep repeating something often enough a few people will believe it.
(1) Bullshit in multiple ways. 1st, boxing at its highest levels often isn't on ppv. And when it is, it is usually replayed later. And even if it is, it's gone on for "20 years" with no change in popularity. (2) boxing is more than heavyweights (3) Ali then, Tyson later. Holmes and Lennox around them. Klitschkos are certainly more like Holmes and Lennox, but they are getting known by most. If you are just going to cherry pick one champ, then you aren't talking about the sport, you are talking about one fighter. (4) yeah, and everyone knows who Floyd Mayweather, Oscar Delahoya, and Manny Pacquiao are. And Ricky Hatton. And Roy Jones. (5) Kelly Pavlik didn't knock off a great champion. (6) Bullshit. Back it up with some statistics or some semblance of proof. Do you know how dead boxing would be if the whiners who cry about it being dead were correct? It would be fossilized by now. It's not. (7) I assume this is USA specific because it is flat out wrong globally. If US specific, then quote some statistics that show participation is down. I've read recently that it is higher than ever, although I can't find a cite. All this bullshit about US kids playing other sports...that really only applies to heavyweights. There just aren't that many pro athletes in other sports that weight less than 200 lbs. (8) This just indicates that you don't know what you are talking about. Older fighters have always been part of the scene.
It's not a question of whether the sport is thriving or not, it's a question of whether you're enjoying it now as much as you have in the past.
