Its one of those fights where I wish there was some way to molecularly analyze the damage done to both men. Morales was half-blind and must have been pissing blood for days afterwards. I bet his eye is still sore. The "Sympathy" that Morales got was based mostly on a desire to justify the fight itself, which, for a few fleeting moments of several rounds, seemed justifiable.

I thought it was a fitting way for Morales to go out, perfectly good fight. No bad taste over it. Competitive in the sense there was consistent two way action, just not close. I agree with your take....Maidana was busting him up & Morales was getting rounds for heroism.

Hopefully Morales retires on the wave of good will he deserves.

I scored the fight a draw, it was very close.

In fact, given that Morales is really a 122 pounder, he should have got that decision.

Heres a tough one - what do you guys think? Durelle in his famous bout with Moore.

Rogers Mtagwa v. Juan Manuel Lopez

Mtagwa had a great finish and had JuanMa badly hurt towards the end, but all the round did was make the fight closer. JuanMa still won (and deserved to win, for anyone who scored the fight with any semblance of objectivity). However, the late rally wasn't enough of a story line, so then came the insistence that Mtagwa was robbed, and that he's a true featherweight contender.

The hype was so ridiculous that some even thought that he'd prove to be a tough challenge for Gamboa three months later. Arum pimped the public and HBO into believing a competitive fight was on tap, when in reality it turned out to be batting practice for Gamboa.

This is known in the world of science as Sympatho-Facetiousness , and in plain English as load of old sympathetic crap.

Possibly, but in any case where under old or previous rules the loser would have been the winner, there will always be cases where the loser draws justifiable sympathy. Today, its possible the fight would have been stopped and Durelle declared the winner. After all, Frank DePaula was floored 3-1 vs Foster and they stopped that one on the 3 knockdown.

If that Bout is Fought TODAY, Durelle More than Likely Wins by 1st Round TKO...Archie Took a SEVERE Asswhipping in that 1st Round & Most Contemporary Refs would STOP it...

Is that relevant? The truth is thats no more worthwhile a distinction than saying Fight X would be stopped much later were it in the 50s. The question is, does Durelle get too much credit.

    Debatable.

The thing is you are asking modern pundits to comment on an old fight- we tend to be influenced by our modern rules and apply them accordingly. For instance, today, there is every chance that Firpo beats Dempsey. Its hard not to feel sorry for a guy who was a bloody good fighter at, perhaps, the wrong time or under the wrong rules.

Quarry is a great example of this. The fight-game has sympathy for Jerry, even though Jerry lost fights he deserved to lose, whether it be his opponent was better, or Jerry fought dumb {injured, for Ellis, or just plain dumb vs Frazier when he eschewed his fight plan}.

Yet here Jerry is, dead, prematurely, and with everybody full of kind words that our predecessors never had for him.

Theyre only the, "wrong," rules because theyre not our rules.

Yes but they are the rules by which boxing is judged today. Todays fighters often come out in top in MM's without the audience being able, or being willing, to factor in things like nutrition, PED's, training conditions, motivation, etc. The inverse is also true.

Do I feel sorry for Durelle? No. He had his chance and probably should have been better prepared for a distance fight. If I recall correctly, he fought the Moore that had already fought Marciano. That gives you an edge, if you are Durelle.

I respect your boxing knowledge and opinions, always Cdogg.

But I disagree with you here. I think Tito is the more formidable Middleweight.

Who did Mugabi beat at 154lbs that was as good as Vargas? Which Middleweight did he beat that was even as good as Joppy?

Mugabi was a middleweight, not a Junior Middleweight... as I pointed out before, he moved down there because his management thought he would do better there... then he fought Duane Thomas, broke his eye, and promptly quit boxing again, gained a million pounds and then came back against terrible bums and won a lucky title against an awful titlist when said titlist slipped and fell and broke his ankle without Mugabi really doing anything... his entire career after Hagler (or Thomas, if you prefer) was a joke and bore little resemblance to his trajectory... Parker, Fletcher, Green and Earl Hargrove were all very solid middleweight contenders who were not just beaten by Mugabi, they were dominated and smashed around the ring as if they were nothing, absolute nobodies... All 4 of those guys would be very competetive with William Joppy and on a good night could beat him... William Joppy was a middleweight "champ" only because he hadn't yet fought Bernard Hopkins... he was a busy, reasonably athletic boxer with an average punch and little-to-nothing to suggest he was anything better than a lower top ten contender in a good era... luckily for him, with three major belts available and the 160 division in a decidedly crappy era, he was able to snag a title and thus become sort of "famous" ... Seriously, watch Mugabi's fights coming up and then tell me thats the same stiff that Terry Norris KOd
