I think in terms of what goes on in the ring, “Ring IQ” and “Intelligence” are the same thing

the only things that matter in a fight are physical talent, fitness, fighting intelligence (call it instinct if you will, but somebody had to teach Duran footwork to start with... how he developed ways to deploy it is a matter of his own fighting intelligence), courage and toughness

if Duran spoke fluent, articulate English, I can’t help but think this idea of him as a primitive fighting ape wouldn’t be nearly so pervasive

Agreed. Outside the ring shouldn't even come into the discussion here.

Floyd = Truly a stupid, limited-minded human being. But an off-the-charts intelligence as a fighter.

Duran is largely a mystery as a PERSON to us non-Spanish speakers. We know he's a God in Panama, and there's always been stories that he's incredibly generous and would give anybody in his country the shirt off his back if they asked.

They might mean he's too generous, but not necessarily dumb. He's never struck me as a low intelligence person - I think he's pretty bright and very charismatic.

But even if Duran WERE a dumb guy, it's irrelevant - he was a genius fighter.

I’ve seen many Duran interviews and he’s always come off to me as a street wise individual. Very charismatic and yes, generous to a FAULT... Similar to Roberto Clemente.
