That's true that PBF has begun "potshotting" recently - he used to let his hands go in combination much more, and use footwork and his arms/shoulders to stay in the pocket and counter in multiples. I understand why he's doing it now as he goes up against bigger fighters in much higher divisions - but it does make you long for his earlier style. I'm not a huge Calderon fan; but he does move his hands more and respond in combination than PBF is doing NOW. From the descriptions of the fight it sounds like he did that vs. Cazares as well....a guy who was 3-4 divisions heavier than him and was 6" taller with a longer reach....and Calderon was willing to go through fire and come off the floor to do it. I guess that's what some folks would like to see from PBF; that willingness to risk it and peform his absolute best (Corrales/Ndou/Sosa are the best I can think of) despite the risk and size/power disadvantage. Peace.
Calderon has also had fights where he ran a good 4 rounds or so. Hell even Leyva was getting to him a bit so he got on his bike. Verde as well. Is he a real good boxer? yes. Is he anymore entertaining than Floyd Mayweather on a consistent basis? Hell no.
Good post I agree! Before when PBF let his hands go more I was a fan. He is a great fighter. But recent he has been pot shotting way too much for my liking. Even though I cant stand him anymore I will admit he is a great fighter. I wish he would risk more. he's way too safe.
How can you say that? At what point in the fight last night did Calderon stood his ground? Dude was always on the bike and held whenever Cazares got too close, he got dropped and hurt because he got caught. Not because he was trading. Calderon is more defensive than Floyd.
I actually meant 7 years into Ricardo's career, like Ivan is now. That said, I don't see why it doesn't make a difference. Lopez did everything by the book in the ring. It's that and longevity that gets him props. But his quality of opposition has always come into question and deservedly so.
HBO should pay James Earl Jones to deliever Floyd's new catch phrase... Floyd Mayweather Jr. proving his greatness...one shot at a time.
