Come on now, both were past their best, especially Chavez... And it was an 8-4 type of fight, he didn't get shut out

I know it's besides the point... but Louis never beat Ezzard Charles. To my knowledge, they only fought once - Louis coming out of retirement, and losing definitively to "officially" crown Charles as lineal heavyweight champ.

The question raised about Chavez is a fair one, but as mentioned, Louis not holding a win over anyone in the Top 50 doesn't change the fact that he's one of the very best ever and in fact Top 5 in the eyes of several.

I don't think that point alone should disqualify Chavez from Top 20 consideration. Sure it's worthy to consider but his overall body of work should at the very least neutralize, if not trump, it.

Thinking this way there is nothing definitive, since one person can always argue against the grain. What this actually means is Is it commonly accepted that...

On reflection I'd say Chavez probably isn't top 20

In all honesty everyone here has probably seen multiple robberies worse than Chavez-Whitaker.. but that doesn't change that Chavez wasn't really competitive. He took a few rounds, but it was a clear and dominant victory for Pernell, who made Chavez look silly and frustrated throughout the entire fight.

but looking frustrated and silly at times against one of the greatest boxers that ever lived when you are a bit past your absolute peak seems a pretty ridiculous reason for thinking a guy was not a truly great fighter

To me, Chavez is a top 20 guy... I could concede top 30... but any lower than that is just psychotic in my eyes

At the time when I took the time to make a top 30 list, I think had him borderline top 20. 21, 22 or something. He's at that level, to me (with Arguello at a similar level).

I love JC Chavez, but most (if not all) of the following have a stronger argument for being ranked above him than otherwise:

    Robinson
    Leonard
    Duran
    Hagler
    Ali
    Eder Jofre
    Whitaker
    Louis
    Charles
    Pep
    Roy Jones Jr
    Arguello
    Armstrong
    Pacquiao

That's 14. If you add Langford and Greb, that's 16.

I think it gets tighter at the 15-20 mark.

JCC is in that range imo. If not, then borderline, as others have already said.

This is almost as ridiculous as suggesting that neither Wlad or Vitali are even Top 30 all time heavyweights.
