Thing is, as tall as Paul is, it's hard for his opponents to get leverage on the shots they throw to his head. Unless you're Martinez, of course.

Ability to take punches. Ok. Does that include his ability to not get hit with shot after shot thrown square on his chin? Or his ability to anticipate and therefore lessen the effect of punches?

Let's take personalities out of the equation. Do you think that a fighter who has not trained hard can be more susceptible to getting knocked out, even early on, than one who has trained hard?

Besides conditioning, remember, training hard is essential in preparing a fighter mentally for a bout - to give him confidence, clearness of purpose, focus.

I think you're under-estimating the significance of training if you think poor training in a poor environment can't account for a performance as shitty as Kirkland's against the, "Japanese fighter."

a guy with some skill and some technique... lots of experience at the elite level, good handspeed... Kirkland's got none of that... Mitchell tagging Williams (and then getting killed basically, in the interest of full disclosure) is not in any way an indicator of Kirkland's prospects against a prime Paul Williams

Kirkland has skill and technique he's just reckless and leaves his chin out. You don't have a 134–12 amateur record, win the Silver Gloves championship four years in a row, and knock out an undefeated can't miss prospect in his own house without some skill and technique...for you to say he has none of that is retarded bro.

    Nonito Donair quote:

ND: Yeah Kirkland was a beast, very strong. But I used my jab and quickness to beat him. He kept dropping his head and I was hitting him with an uppercut. But man that dude was knocking kids out at like 14 years old. Even though I beat him, he still won the outstanding fighter of the tournament because he knocked everybody out except me.

Wow, how bizarre. Kirkland obviously grew way more. I take it they were about 14 then?

It's random when you hear of match ups like that in the amateurs, like Carl Froch when he fought Jason Booth. That was random

yeah I think so...They were both accomplished amateurs and I heard Kirkland had a chance to make the Olympic team but went pro instead. Skill and technique come in different forms and IMO he has more in his left nut than Sharmbe Mitchell.

Although he can look reckless, he's not a bad offensive fighter at all. He does have decent speed, power, punching technique, accuracy etc.

His sheer recklessness can make him look Mayorga esque and more scrubby than he is.

But man, undertrained or not, I just can't get that Ishida fight out of mind.

And although the beating he put on Angulo was highly impressive, as was the pace he sustained, Angulo was basically a gassed out punching bag after round 1, with the handspeed of George Foreman.

I do like Kirkland though, he is highly entertaining. Probably the single most aggressive "name" fighter around today. I look forward to his next fight.

I remember something funny about Donaire too, there was a video floating around of tryouts for the contender or something, and he put a beating on some middleweight, even knocked him down.
