I'm afraid so mate. Calzaghe was exposed as a serial bummer, by the Daily Mirror. And also an atheist racist.
There isn't, you're right there. Hopkins also knew this which is why he was never serious about making the fight until he had nothing to lose. Calzaghe beats any version of Hopkins, and I've never thought otherwise.
Sorry mate, you're a nice guy, but this is shite. Hopkins might fit your criteria for "pleasing to the eye", might be more old skool, but it doesn't make him better I'm afraid.
Mate he was about to sign up for just that as part of the showtime deal (which mandated he moved up to 168 to fight Joe) before HBO made him a better offer and one which kept the possibility of Tito and Oscar fights available which were many times more lucrative. Hopkins wasn't scared of Calzaghe he thought he sucked. And if you really think Joe beats a 6 year younger version of Hopkins you're seriously deluded my main man. He barely beat the 43 year old one.
He beat the 43 year old version comfortably. Making a fight uncomfortable isn't the same as making it competitive. 9-3 Calzaghe with an extra point for Hopkins due to the KD. Easy fight to score, unless you award rounds for not trying to fight.
That isn't my criteria for him being better. superior performances against similar level of opposition is. De facto shut outs against long term champs like Holmes (one judge gave Keith a couple of rds after the point deduction but it was completely unjustifiable), Joppy & Glen Johnson with no counter veiling dodgy performances against guys like Robin Reid. I'm not pretending the difference is big - maybe sometimes it sounds like I am because I hate Calzaghe so much - but I think Hopkins was, lets say, a shade better. Not much, but distinguishably so.
Adelaide Byrd is blind. HBO had it comfortably for Joe. Honestly mate, Hopkins wasn't even trying to fight from round four onwards, he was just acting like a cunt.
The Calzaghe-Reid fight was an aberration, much like Mayweather-Castillo 1, where a particular set of circumstances transpire to make a competitive fight between fighters of different ability levels. Other than that fight he barely lost a round during his entire reign at 168. Much like Hopkins. Really there isn't anything Hopkins done throughout his 160 reign which made me think "wow, he is better than Calzaghe". Nothing.
not me, my criticism of Calzaghe is that he's a knob who jazzercises his way to victory... watch a Calzaghe fight and play the song "She's a Maniac" in the background... Synchronicity, lads all he needs are legwarmers Bob Foster would have sodomized him and had a Wales of a time doing so
Certainly wouldn't. At least not if Calzaghe had just fought a guy regarded as top 3 p4p less than 12 months previous.
:: I love these Calzaghe debates between Cdogg/Hut and Feeds/slice Classic stuff. I'm as big a Calzaghe fan as Feebs and slice but difference is that I'm ALSO a fan of Hopkins...so I'm never in the middle of a Hopkins vs Calzaghe debate. Hopkins is greater than Calzaghe, clearly. Talent wise, they are fairly equivalent. Two great great fighters.
This is my point. He beat a blown up welterweight/light middleweight who had that kind of standing because of a win he never deserved against Oscar and two cases of child abuse with Reid and Vargas. He was NEVER that highly rated in my eyes, of course I can't help what the sheep think, if they choose to believe hyperbole that's their problem.
For the record I think both Hopkins & Calzaghe are overrated. The notion that Hopkins is a top 3 GOAT middleweight is balderdash with big balls.
That's fair. I think they're in the same boat, whether you think they're overrated or all time greats.
But Calzaghe spent his career weighing in on fight night as a 175 pounder which means he's fair game for the murderous Foster... It would be lovely to see... He'd also have fucking butchered Hopkins, no disagreement there
Hut (I think) sees my point. Whether you think they both suck or they're both greats, they belong together in the same boat. What pisses me off is when I see one guy heralded as an all time great genius who walks on water whilst the other is seen as some kind of windmill on crack. They've had practically identical careers.
