And he took a point of hatton immediately

without warning, but warned both hopkins and calzaghe repeatedly that he didn't want to have to take a point away from either of them. hmmmm....

he didn't do a good job.....he was well aware of what was going on, but just did fuck all about it. The one thing he did get right was telling Bernard to get on with it after he complained of another low blow.

Hopkins holding was persistent, and a firm warning, followed by a point deduction if it continued, would have been well justified.

the bit that angered me the most was when Hopkins clearly put his head forward into Calzaghe's.....it wasn't so much a butt, but a push....it was blatent, yet Calzaghe got a talking to, and Cortez gave Hopkins the most insufficient of warnings, half-arsedly tapping his own forehead

I thought cortez did pretty good last night

He is just inconsistant when taking points away. He kept out of the way of the fighters and let them fight.

Have you ever seen Bernard fight before.

This is the same ref who let's John Ruiz do whatever the fuck he wants. In comparision he did a brilliant job last night.

Even though Cortez has slipped a little, his performance was pretty much as I expected it to be during the Hatton-PBF fight. He let both guys get very close, lead with their heads and hold each other a hell of a lot.

This is why people, myself included, were so confused by the way he refereed the Hatton-Floyd fight. His performance that night, whilst having very little bearing on the outcome to be fair, was extremely out of character that night. :dunno:

  10. Does it really fucking matter? Floyd was winning the fight going away and knocked his man out.

That's not the point at all, nobody is disputing that.

The point is, Cortez fucking sucked, and was incredibly biased.

If Cortex had have allowed Hatton to fight like Calzaghe did on Saturday, Hatton would have stopped Mayweather.

In an imaginary, Mean Mister Mustard world is how...

The one thing that really, really shocked me about that fight is how much better Floyd was on the inside anyway. On the few times the fighters got close, Floyd practically manhandled Hatton there anyway.

Even as a Hatton nuthugger, and as someone who thought Cortez was a disgrace on the night, I can't see that Hatton being prohibited from fighting up close made much difference, if any. He had no success there even when he was permitted to try.

    Clever!

Cortez is a crap referee...but it was Mayweather who destroyed Hatton, not Cortez.

I don't really see how Cortez refereed a bad fight. Hatton went into the fight with a bad rep for holding and being a dirty fighter. The Mayweather camp obviously played that card at the fighter meetings to make sure he wouldn't be allowed to hold.

People play the he didn't let him fight his inside fight, but fail to realise that when fighters are clinched it's the refs job to break fighters. If wrestling is fighting your fight then he is in the wrong sport.

As for the point deduction. People can say the punch didn't land but it was he knew that Mayweather had his back to him and he tried desperately to land it. Blows to the back of the head are very dangerous because it can damage the cervical vertebrae and subsequently the spinal cord, which may lead to serious spinal cord injury or even death.

Hatton was getting torn up on the inside, so it's not like Cortez breaking them up was hurting him any.

Deep down I knew Floyd would beat Hatton, but I must admit I was genuinely surprised that he handled Hatton on the inside with ease.

I was also surprised that he stopped Hatton.

    Forreal.

Cortez was doing him a favor. LOL@ Hatton bulling his way in and eating shots all night long. I doubt he's the same.

Okay - so maybe not stopped....but, you allow to Hatton to work on the inside at your peril....Cortez pretty much broke Hatton's inside-work from Rd2 onward.
Even Mayweather himself said Hatton's effective stuff came on the inside.

Unfortunately, we'll never know if Cortez' harsh refereeing took Hatton out of his gameplan and allowed Mayweather to pepper Hatton with every shot in the book.

I guess that's the problem with that style of boxing....you either have to have a Chavez-like chin or you get crushed.
