If the era was shit, then how come you rate Charles and Robinson as great fighters? Surely, they too must have been doing nothing but beating up lousy fighters... I disagree wholeheartedly that 1940s was anything other than outstanding, particularly at Light Heavy, Featherweight and Middleweight, where it rivals any decade ever.

As for heavyweights, if globalization is your argument, than surely right now has to be the best time... During the heyday of Ali/Foreman/Frazier/Holmes/Tyson/Holyfield, basically 1960-1995 or so, how many fighters from outside America were rated in the heavyweight top five? maybe 7 or 8 in that whole period? I can think of five legit foreign contenders/belt holders from 1960-1995 (no, Henry fucking Cooper doesn't count) Johannsen, Joe Bugner, Gerrie Coetzee, Frank Bruno and Lennox Lewis... three of them hailed from the same place.

Even forgetting Louis, that decade boasted of Robinson, Charles, Pep, Saddler, Moore, Williams, LaMotta, Cerdan, Burley, etc. ... I can't see how an era with those various fighters in it (nevermind all of the good names I left out) could be considered a "shit" era... Why? because the film stock isn't as good?

I could see watching the 1910s and saying "what the fuck sport is this?" or watching the 1920s into the 1930s and saying "ok, it looks more like boxing but there are still very few guys who look "modern"" ... but the 1940s doesn;t look that way to my eyes. It looks like guys who know how to fight, know how to box real well. Compared to right now, a lot of the guys look MORE advanced technically (just like good boxers in the 1980s look more advanced than right now) ... I don;t really see a dramatic improvement in ability between then and the 1980s, I just see a better video quality. Ezzard Charles looks like he can fight his ass off every bit as much as Mike Spinks does. It isn't like looking at Gene Tunney and saying "ok, good for the time, but he's pretty much Murray Sutherland in the late 70s" ... I don't think there's nostalgia involved either. I can;t have nostalgia for a time long before I was born and if that were the case why wouldn't I be impressed by Georges Carpentier in the 20s, where there is even more time for nostalgia to develop? The reason is because, while good for the time, Carpentier looks like someone Joey Maxim would shutout in 1947. I don't understand it. Willie Pep looks like a magician, a ridiculously good boxer. It's not HD, but it's pretty easy to see what he's doing nonetheless.

Are you hoping childish insults and the projection of your homosexual fantasies onto me will make me stop making fun of you? If I'm aggravating your mental issues, just let me know. Sometimes I start to feel bad, but then I remember that PeaPod delivers.

    Aah

It wasn't great, but it's not like Louis didn't completely assrape the competition, that's my point. He didn't "hang around", he beat the hell out of people
