Agreed. Although i thought it might take a few more round to get the stoppage you could tell Marquez was getting to Diaz. When they were in the centre of the ring Diaz had no answers for JMM's accurate combinations. Even in rounds Marquez loses, he does damage and seems to learn what his next steps will be.

I agree. It's not like he was 1 punch KO'd out of the blue. Marquez picked him apart, slowly but surely. He found his rhythm and sharpshot the shit out of him.

marquez got diaz's respect in the third round and that was the turning point of the fight. if diaz didn't have pillow fists he couldve won vs this older smaller version of marquez. which is why I'd favor hatton over marquez.

let's face it if a guy like diaz was around at featherweight when marquez was younger he wouldve been chewed up in 4 or 5 one sided rounds or sent into a tentative shell. his size/strength advantage was the only reason he stuck around for as long as he did

I found it funny that Diaz seemed to let Marquez off the hook when he hurt JMM in the 2nd. I think Diaz got hurt by something from JMM right after he hurt JMM.

This is exactly true, and even with the size advantage I was surprised he did as good as he did early on.

I think if Diaz is going to use that style he needs to do what Mosley and Chavez used to do and that is destroy the body for most of the fight and go up stairs later. Had he started out with THAT style he could have possibly had JMM more effectively tired.

Agreed. I love JMM but would favor Hatton over him for sure.

diaz's style was for marquez to take apart. like what many has predicted, the baby bull will try impose his pressure and strength in the earlier rounds but slowly but surely marquez will catch and hurt him and stop him the later rounds. that's been diaz's style and I've been wondering how diaz could be stopped until he got this fight with jmm. diaz showers you with punches with decent speed but i thought they were predictable. its raw strength and volume of not so hard punches that won diaz's fights. if you can counterpunch him and hurt him like what marquez did, there's a good chance you can stop him. but it takes a fighter in jmm's caliber to do that.

Why does Bernard Hopkins try to get his face on the camera in every interview on HBO? It's almost like he's sitting there praying they're going to ask him a question. You don't see Mosley and Oscar sucking off the camera like Hops does.

I also noticed that Diaz really can't seem to get rid of that baby fat around his mid section. Did y'all see it jiggle as he got dropped that 2nd time?

marquez is the best mexican fighter i've seen since chavez.

in terms of skill, he's probably one of the best i've ever seen.

the only fighter who can do that right now is the pacman. jmm is a real beast. i'd like to see pac-jmm 3 at 140.

I've a feeling Marquez's fights with Pacman emboldened him a lot. He KO'd Casamayor and Diaz. He went tooth-and-nail with Manny for 24 rounds and got knocked down 4 times. After going through that, he probably felt as big as Casa and Juan might be, they probably won't make him go through hell like Pac did.

    Agreed on both.

And what's interesting about the skill dimension of his greatness is that it's more pure compared to many other greats out there.

Guys like Hopkins, Floyd Mayweather, RJJ, are very skilled. But they also have other things (size, exceptional talent manifest in athleticism, speed, power) going on for them that hugely compliments their skill.

You can't really say the same for Marquez. Which makes his technical ability even much more impressive.

That's true. Although he has no real obvious weaknesses, in terms of natural physical abilities he doesn't stand out either.

He's not slow, but doesn't really surprise anybody with speed. He can take a good shot but doesn't have a granite chin. He hits pretty hard but is never really considered a puncher. Same thing for other similar "categories"

Overrall he's sucessful because brilliant boxing technician.

The best part of the night was waiting for Maverick to show up in the parking lot. When we decided that he wasnt't gonna show, Karl bought everyone beer. We showed up inside the arena in rd 8 so we did get to see the knockout.

I heard the first 7 rounds were pretty good. All in all, a fun night.

Marquez's physically abilities were also developed in conjunction with his skill.

His handspeed is a prime example. JMM not exceptionally fast per se. But damn, that counter right he has is one the quickest and snappiest I'ver ever seen. He honed and developed it to the extent that it "acquired" speed, and not because he's particularly fast-handed. That's fvcking impressive.

Fightnews.com is reporting that Maverick backed out when it was announced you were one of the official judges. Is this true?

untrue. I was there to support Karl because Maverick once called me names.

Besides fighters of he calibur of Karl and Maverick dont need judges.

marquez is a machine. but he was blessed with tremendous physical abilities also. his reflexes simply are not what they were up until 5 years ago.

Great great effort by Diaz he did a lot better than I thought he would. Marquez is a great... I said this before and will say it again. A few differences in judging and Marquez could conceviably be the best guy P4P.

Not so at all... any time marquez tasted canvas with the exceptio of pacquio 2 it was because he opened up.

Marquez is a victim of shitty judging and a victim of simply being on th wrong end of a decision that was fair but could have gone either way.

What if Floyd had lost the first Corrales fight and the Oscar fight?

This is a good summary of the fight.

Diaz set the mark, and Marquez exceeded it. An excellent performance by JMM. Diaz has nothing to be ashamed of, because he pressed the limit as best he could. He doesn't have the power to gain respect with any one punch.
