I would classify him as an "entry level" great fighter :kidcool: Don't get me wrong, he was an excellent, classic pressure fighter, but in no fight I have ever watched him in did I get the sense he was truly amazing, like amongst the best ever, the same feeling you get when you watch a Pacquiao or Floyd at their best, or indeed any of the Fab 4. He was far more beatable than that tier, and more basic too. I just find it absurd he gets talked about in the same breath as the Durans and Leonards of the world. Duran would have given him a one sided bludgeoning at any weight. Part of his overration comes from being the most popular Mexican fighter ever I guess. And regarding Chavez - Taylor, to me it's this simple does anyone really, truly believe that if "JC Superstar" was knocked down and looking groggy with a few seconds left in the fight they would have stopped it? Not a chance.
To be honest I just can't see ANY pressure fighter doing well against Pacquiao, lightweight size, apart from of course Duran. And the main reason for that is Duran's defense shits on every other attacking fighter in history, and he's just so sneaky, and great at smothering his opponent and controlling them. Pacquiao's combination of speed/power/accuracy is just insane, coupled with his ability to throw punches from any angle and position, gives him one of the most dynamic offenses in history, and more importantly gives him a style that's pretty much made to destroy pressure fighters. Pacquiao can be outboxed, and countered, but a classic pressure fighter like Chavez is just getting busted up.
Seriously. back when I first started posting I used to troll and rip Chavez because Mexicans are real losers about that guy. I saw guys crying when he beat Taylor like they won the lottery. He was sort of overrated in his day, but getting underrated now. The guy was a magnificent fighter, great style and tough as nails. I never really liked him either. The guy looked like a janitor, but was hard as fuck.Chavez lost the Meldrick tAYLOR FIGHT. I don't care about the corrupt stoppage. I think Lucian bUTE LOST to Andrade even if he "officially" won. Pac beat Bradley. No need to get legalistic when it comes to the first Meldrick Taylor fight. It was a corrupt ending. Hoever, who cares. Meldrick Taylor was a fine fighter himself and Chavez had something like 90 victories before his first loss against a slew of decent fighters.
No he looked like a guy who sells Lettuce from a stand. He looked like a Paisa or a janitor and a farmer. I think it actually worked to his advantage. People just looked at him like he was some scrub drunken Indian with no muscle tone. Yet, he had stamina that was ridiculous and was obviously incredibly strong and tough. He had one of the best chins ever.
I agree, he really did look like a burrito salesman or farmer or something. It's possible people underestimated him based on his looks too, he doesn't look scary in the slightest. I should point out though, that Chavez is Mexican, not Indian :kidcool:
It is slang around here for Indigenous looking Mexicans to be called indians which is based on a 500 year old error of which I am fully aware. Marco Antonio Barrera called Erik Morales a "stupid indian" in Spanish. Much like the Native Americans are also called Indians, wrongly but it is still in use especially in the lowly realm of the boxing world. I have never met a burrito salesman. However, my mind's eye does compute an image very much like Chavez. His son looks more like a donkey show attendant or a victim on a Narcoblog.
Nah. No-one beats the holy shit out of JMM. Marquez is very underrated round these parts. Chavez wins, but it's no blowout. MTF
Haha, I know I'm just nausing you. Chavez's son used to look hilarious, when he was 19/20, he looked like such an ugly, spotty dork.
BTW Ike, I've never seen a Burrito salesman either but that is what I see when I look at Chavez in my mind I think.
That's an accurate description. There's definitely something donkey-ish about him too, Ike is onto something with the donkey show attendant son. His face looks donkeyish and like someone that would definitely be "at one" around donkeys. Which lends more credence to the idea that Duran would flatten him.
Duran's not flattening a guy that Edwin Rosario (maybe the hardest punching 135 pounder of all time) hit with the hardest shots he could muster and could not even budge... he could and would win, but it's a tough fight for him and he's not dropping Chavez
