A few of the documentaries about Tyson I've seen (Fallen Champ in the mid 90s, ESPN Sportscentury in 2002, Beyond the Glory in 2003) talk about how Cus just let a lot of things slide for Mike because he was so talented.

The perception of the 2 started off as a feel-good Hollywood story but I think nowadays more people see it otherwise.

I think that Cus did care for Mike but if Mike wasn't so talented he would've kicked him to the curb.

I disagree that Cus only took Mike in because he could box. Mike didn't come to Cus as a talented destructive force. He became that way under Cus' tutelage so obviously Cus had already made the commitment to accept Mike from the start. It isn't like Mike wasn't the only kid living there with Cus and them. Later when it became apparent how talented Mike was obvioulsy he's going to invest more into the guy whether it's his son, cousin, friend or whatever. What Cus did with Mike was natural seeing as how Mike was turning into a great fighter, and Cus trained fighters. You never saw Cus appearing to go after Mike's money or fame. All Cus wanted to do was make a great fighter and that is where his love or favoritism steemed from. I see nothing wrong or "bad" about that. As for overlooking Tyson's bad deeds, obviously that's not a great thing and shows a kind of lack of caring about Tyson the person as opposed to Tyson the boxer. That may make Cus a bad father figure, but a bad person, I disagree.
