Just watched a good copy of the fight and scored it, 6-5-1 for Algieri. Very close fight, but Algieri seemed like the rightful winner to me, in terms of the overall feel of the fight, and even in rounds. More than usual, I was struck by quite how basic Khan is. Did he use one feint in the entire fight? Basically all he does is throw the jab/right hand, with the odd random flurry mixed in for your button mashing pleasure. He still fights like a point scoring amateur, essentially. He is a real overachiever. Even though he does have some elite attributes, given his crappy chin and quite how basic he is - I'm amazed he's had as good a career as he has.
The money he has made is out of all proportion to his talent. He was on PPV for the Prescott fight, FFS. You couldn't paid him to stand upright by the time that one was over.
The reason people turned on him in England was because of comments like that and his being pushed and forced onto the paying public. Hatton was on free-tv as late as the Oliveira fight.....fighting better guys in better fights than Khan, FFS.
Brook is on the verge of crossing over to the mainstream and catching the casual fans interest, but he isn't quite there yet. The Khan fight would do that for him, obviously.
Yeah, Slice is right, Brook really isn't liked. He's not London, he's not Mega PPV Kaboom Shazzam High Profile, but he is getting there, and last Saturdays card won't have hurt one bit.....for openers.....he beat a name Domestic opponent, something Khan hasn't even attempted. Brook is definitely more liked than Khan, especially since the Kiddy Raper stuff happened, it will have eaten into Khans Khasual supporters and then some.
Obviously I'm no Brit but I have to believe the image problem Khan has in England is his own doing. He struts around as though he's as accomplished as Froch and/or Calzaghe and talks as though he's as dominant as Lemmon Lewis was. He doesn't fight with the passion Hatton did. The only one talking about him and Mayweather is him. The more Brook fights and wins the higher his profile will be. I'm not huge Brook fan but the moment he connects solidly on Khan the fight is over.
Khan is fairly awful and must be matched well. You have to put him in with guys who can't punch, have a height and/or reach advantage or are slow as molasses. He has what I call front end speed. Meaning, he can throw fast shots but has no ability to counter. Also, he doesn't have good reflexes. He rarely recognizes in coming punches which is why he gets hit cleanly so often. He has several additional highlight KO losses in his career left.
