Yup, Millwall Neanderthal territory. Been there once, never ever again.

Khan is the most unpopular British world champion I can remember. He started off very popular after the Olympics but he lost a lot of goodwill among boxing fans when he milked his ITV contract (he is the last major British fighter to get a free-to-air, terrestrial TV channel to back him) and lost most of the rest of his followers when he disappeared off to SKY PPV to fight Prescott.

When he lost that fight, most British people laughed their heads off, but Werren stuck with him on PPV and even his fight with Oisin Fagin was on PPV. The fight with Kotelnik was heavily publicised here, but whispers indicated that Khan's title winning effort was bought by the sum total of 35,000 people (if true, this is by far the lowest SKY PPV number any British fighter has ever had here).

In spite of ol' Irish's scepticism, there WAS racism directed towards Khan by the time he fled for the US. I was at the Khan-Salita fight and saw and heard this first-hand myself. Many people in the arena that night paid and came simply in the hope that Khan would lose- something I have never seen before in a British arena towards a British world champion.

I'll be interested to see how well Khan's stock his 'bounced' after the Maidana fight. That was a hell of a scrap and it was probably magnified here by being in the slipstream of the horrible Fraudley-haye debacle which was also PPV a few weeks earlier and which did VERY big numbers (the first fight in a while I saw bars, pubs and clubs advertising here in the days leading up to it). Khan also got some very positive publicity here for the first time since he won that Olympic medal in 2004, which might help sales. I think the days of Khan selling 35,000 PPV's are probably long gone, but he'll never make the kind of PPV numbers that Hatton or Lennox routinely pulled in here.

Ultimately, though, the sad fact is that all of Khan's fights here are on PPV now (with the exception of the Mallinaggi fight, which ITV strangely outbid SKY for and showed live at daft-o'clock in the morning for free) and have been for a while (Salita and Fagin probably the worst pair aired to date). Khan's next fight will be on PPV for sure, whether or not he fights Bradley, Alexander, Peterson or indeed Curtis friggin' Woodhouse...

Have you seen any of his fights yet Irish? He's fucking woeful, the only broadcaster he'll be signing with is Paramount Comedy. He was actually one win away from a British title shot as well but lost to some bum

Wow. Thats a new angle. For a moment I was trying to mate the commentary to the "action" and drawing a major blank. It is possible that David threw 20 wide shots, then stopped for tea and a breather, said a few words of encouragement to himself then went back to work.
