Best matchup since Calzaghe Kessler to me, but really this fight is bigger. Imo, Ward is P4P #1 and Kovalev is P4P #1 puncher. Perhaps, the matchup that this fight most closely resembles is Hagler vs Mugabi, except Mugabi was coming up in weight and we have the opposite here. Another matchup, that didn't happen, would be if Roy and McClellan fought at McClellan's peak. Just checked and this compares pretty good. McClellan beat Julian Jackson the 2nd time on May 5, 1994; Roy beat Toney on November 18, 1994. If they had fought each other next, we'd have the P4P #1 vs P4P #1 puncher thing going on.
I think it would be more entertaining and have better replay value but it's not as intriguing as Kov-Ward. Looking forward to this more. I just hope Ward doesn't pull a stink job.
Agreed. I liken Kov-Ward to a Chavez Taylor 1 and GGG Canelo more to a Leonard Hagler in the sense that the former is a better matchup from a purists point of view but the latter generates more excitement because of the names involved.
This fight is the business. The kind of fight that real boxing fans salivate over. I think Kovalev wins but I wouldn't bet much on it and can't wait to see it. MTF
Ward is too inactive too really make this a super-fight in the common-sense of the word but it is certainly the biggest fight around 168-175 since Calzaghe-Kessler, I agmikEd. Ward is slick but IMO he is hittable late. The Froch fight showed that, late on, he slows down and can be hit. Additionally, what Ward is about at 175 is a big question mark. All things that add to the enjoyment of this fight. MTF
Nah. GGG and Canelo are practically the same size, but with Kov-Ward, Ward has moved up and is going to fight a killer. More question marks surrounding Kov-Ward.
