I go on the Scene, and the first thing I see is: Pascal, "Stoppage was early. I was gonna KO Kovalev." Neil was 100% right. Shoulda let it go on and that ass clown get hospitalized.
I'd have picked the old man Eubanks to beat Pascal. Pascal is decent, no more than that. The version of Eubanks Joe beat was diminished but showed afterwards he had plenty left. Kovalev's resume is, lets be absolutely frank, totally shite. His best three wins are a guy Calzaghe beat years ago, a guy Froch beat years ago and Nathan Cleverly :: I take the point about the manner of the win, though. It was impressive, no doubt about that. And like I said, I rate him highly. He's obviously good and his power is obviously legit. Those calling him 'special' and whatnot are huffing on glue, though. He's done nowt yet to suggest he's in the kind of exalted company some here are placing him with. MTF
Precisely. Some boxing fans pretend otherwise but the truth is that we ALL love to watch an effortless destroyer at work. That sort of natural, killer power cannot be taught - it's natural, brute force which means every second of the fight could be the last. Boxing fans naturally LOVE that shit. But such fighters invariably start to get overrated and a hell of a lot of them get found out when a guy with better fundamentals, a bit of speed and a solid chin stand in front of them. You can list loads of examples. I'm not saying this will definitely happen to Kov, just that the love-in seems premature to me. MTF
Calzaghe proved more, even with his shitty resume, than Kov has at this point. Calzaghe proved he could beat guys big punching but slower guys than him. Kovalev hasn't beaten a Calzaghe-type fighter yet or indeed anyone better than Jean Pascal. Seriously, Jean Pascal is his best win. MTF
Speed, as you know, isn't just about how fast you can throw. It's about moving, feinting, setting up shots and throwing them. Matty Ice never landed more than half a dozen big shots in that entire fight. Garcia was too elusive for him. I agree that Kov is better than Lucas, BTW. I always thought Lucas was a pretty average guy with a big punch (and got shit here for it). Kov is obviously good and has effortless power. MTF
:: Here was me thinking his 'improved resume' at 175 was because he lost to Froch and therefore wasn't involved in the Super Six at 168, where all the titlists (bar Bute, who said Froch wiped his arse with) were busy fighting, so he moved up to 175 having fought (and lost) precisely one title fight at 168. My mistake. MTF
As I said earlier, I somewhat agree with you, it's just that we simply don't rate Calzaghe as highly, IMHO Calzaghe isn't part of that "exalted company" you talk about.
True, but I think Calzaghe was actually more hurt by that than when Hopkins dropped him. Roy didn't follow up at all because he figured it was just a flash knockdown.
Of course he was more hurt. Roy had just smashed a forearm into his face. It was a UFC move, unintentional, but it had that effect.
:: Absolutely. All I'm saying is that because it didn't feel like a solid shot to Roy, he missed out on the one narrow opportunity he had in that fight.
Fair enough. Not sure what that has to do with Calzaghe's chin, but yeah, it was more of a window than Roy realised. It was a forearm smash, though. Not a punch. MTF
How things have changed. When I first joined seconds out, back in 2000, if you had told me that 15 years hence, I would be sat here witnessing fuckers pull Russian bangers out of their arse and use them to try and fight off the Calzone praise, I would have said you were mad. Mad. We must be mad. Literally mad.
So Kovalev definitely is the best fite-man, because Roy was asleep and missed out on the benefits of a forearm smash. Also, if you do X times Y to the power of 10, minus 4, equals 10 clouts to the head in the matter of about 6 minutes.
This fucking place reminds me of one of those old communist regime changes. They will have Calzaghe up next....charged as "The Gang of One".......airbrushing him out of photos and hacking boxrec to remove his name. Fans: "I heard about Calzaghe" Fightbeat Comintern: "You heard wrong comrade. Move along. All praise to Kovalone"
I don't believe Roy would have got the knockout even if he knew Calzaghe was hurt. It wouldn't have mattered if it came from a forearm or roundhouse kick. All I'm saying is that Roy didn't know so therefore didn't even bother following up. To him it was more of an official kd because somebody went down/put their glove on the canvas. Calzaghe was no stranger to hitting the floor. Ancient Hopkins and Roy weren't the only two to put him there. Kovalev hits like a beast and is technically skilled enough to land his shots. He also follows up. If Kovalev dropped Calz in the same manner I think he would have explored the situation whereas a gun shy RJ didn't. The "math" is Calzaghe is probably hitting the deck a few times resulting in 10-8 rounds.
But when it comes to other fighters (Wlad Klitschko) everybody is yearning for the good old days when 'Murica was on top. So which is it?
As has been pointed out, Joe hit the floor in fights he did not expect to get floored in. In the fights where there was a real prospect of him shipping heavy leather {Vs Reid, in 1999, Reid could bang with the right, and against Lacy} he never came close to being floored. Tito Trindad had a habit of being floored...and getting up. That reminds me.....Trinidad used to be touted as a man on SO who would beat the crap out of Joe if they ever met.
Like I said....if you had told me I would see this day, I would have said you were mad. Mad Mad Mad. Calzone is hated because people kept waiting for him to lose and he didn't.
Look at him, the ugly, Mongolian bastard, and they can't get enough of this Proto-Simian ape. Oh no wait sorry that's Broner.............. Here's our man............
The difference is you seem to think it's some kind of Euro bias or least want to argue the case when you want to argue.
