I've enjoyed Larry Merchant a gooddeal when HBO boxing was around. Yeah he can be off the mark sometimes and can sound like a cynical prentious ass but he was a real fight fan who knew the sport well. A great contributor to boxing.

 

If merchant was 40 years younger he woulda showed up at that gym in Dallas, unlike a certain Mexican American poster here, and given reed a proper hiding

 

I'll clarify what I meant about him not being a fan. It was very common for him to not have seen a foreign boxer fight (even on tape) until that boxer was on an HBO show. That is indefensible for the position he held.

That was very common at the time, and certainly not exclusive to Merchant. I love boxing as much as anybody, and didn't have access to seeing a lot of fighters until the YouTube era.

There simply wasn't as much access to foreign fighters/fights in the 90s/early 00s as there is today. No doubt Merchant, along with Lampley and the rest of the team, watched the film HBO was able to obtain on these foreign fighters, but let's be honest... 30 years ago every fighter in the top 10 P4P either fought on HBO or Showtime anyway.

That's a pretty flimsy argument to make in attacking Merchant's fandom. You might as well just say 99.5% of US boxing writers at the time weren't boxing fans, if thats your position.
