I think everybody who saw that fight said the same thing. :dunno: Same thing with the Hopkins / Hakkar fight. You could tell even Bernard was embarrassed to be in the same ring with the guy and he didn't seem to be too upset when Merchant voiced that very thing to him.
1st of All,REED Posted that Quote N RESPONSE to the Belief that Merchant is Some Sort of Sugar Shane LOVER... He ISN'T... 2nd,REED is a Believer that if,If,IF U're Fighting a Shaky Opponent,GET RID Of his Ass LIKE he's a "Shaky Opponent",which is PRECISELY what Shane Did to Adrian Stone... Yet Merchant STILL BITCHED about it... N the Case of Hopkins/Hakkar,Bernard was VERY Offended by Merchant's Line of Questioning... "Stop Being IGNORANT,Larry" - Bernard Hopkins...That's an EXACT Quote of Bernard's After Merchant's INCESSANT Whining,During the Hakkar Post Fight Interview... REED
Was he "Entertaining" when he OPENLY COMPLAINED about DeLa Entering the Ring to Mariachi Music & Wearing a Sombrero for the 1st Time??... REED:dunno:
he is entertaining when he mumbles bullshit at the end. I don think he is pretty good at putting fighters on the spot who want credit for bullshit like Calzague after the Manfredo fight. Sure there are things about him you can rip but you can do that about everyone on HBO, Showtime, Espn. I don't think there is someone who you will completely like or agree with everything the say. Somehow I think the HBO crew is the one that has worked the best for years. I can't stand the showtime crew or those ppvs when they hire people like Bob Costas and James Brown. Clowns that have no business in boxing. I understand if you don't like Larry but is he really that much worst than the rest? :dunno:
It wasn't just about the fight itself, that kind of response was building up through the Diaz and Taylor fights. It was said of frustration because Mosley hadn't been able to capitalize more on the win over DLH in the year since the fight. It's also the reason for Lampley's comments after the fight...when in one of the rare occurances when he has some closing comments he made mention of his conversation with his daughter about Mosley (at least I think this was the fight). I believe Merchant also compared the fight to watching Mark McGwire taking batting practice. Merchant has always respected Mosley.
So because he criticized an opponent of Shane's means he's not a fan of his? :nono: Bernard Hopkins is my favorite fighter...........but Hakkar, c'mon. And Bernard wasn't that offended.......Merchant did go a little too far and Bernard had a smile on his face when he told him to "Stop being ignorant". Merchant likes Bernard to, even if he has occasionally voiced criticisms of him. And Zab deserves all the criticism that comes his way. Forget the in the ring crap he's done. Just that video that shows him getting his buddies to bust up a dice game and beat another man 5 on 1 tells me all I need to know about his character. Fuck him and his boring talentless brother.
I believe the line was something like "as much as I like mariachi music, in this setting it sucks." I never found anything wrong with the comment and think the suspension aftewards was a weak bit of appeasement by HBO. The interesting thing about that comment was he said it during the DLH-Whitaker broadcast, and did so because he felt that it was an obvious marketing ploy and also because he felt that Whitaker - as the champion - was slighted during the entire promotion of the fight. I think Merchant deserves credit for saying it at the time. It should also be mentioned that Merchant was one of Pernell Whitaker's biggest supporters for a long time...and that at one time, he was among De La Hoya's biggest critics.
This ain't a black/white thing. Nor a "black American" thing. (I'm really sick of every reply to a thread about Zab having to reference race as well) This is me having a great disliking for guys who talk it and can't walk it. Its me having a thing against guys who don't take losses like men (the Mayweather fiasco and post Tszyu). It's me having a thing against guys who make news for all the wrong reasons and give very little back to the sport that made them. Guys of his ilk (any fucking colour you want them to be) are embarrassments to any self-respecting sport. I've got no time for any of them. I've never liked boxers like Zab, just like I've never liked footballers like Gascgoine, NFL players like Romo, baseballers like Rogers, basketballers like Isiah Rider **EDIT** I gotta include Artest as well. Big mouths, dirty, 'tough guys', who's media clippings are bigger than their games. Fuck them all. You can make it personal with me all you wish. It's of no concern. I've got no problem with you, until you're on my TV set or in my news paper, bringing negative attention to something I enjoy.
Wasn't Judah saying shit like "I'm be the best that ever did it" in the taped pieces Showtime aired before the Tszyu fight. He did a lot of talking for a fighter that hadn't really done that much to that point. Judah was already a champion, and had some solid wins under his belt, but he hadn't proven anything to justify the immense hype he was receiving very early in his career. Of course the leader of the chorus was Kellerman, who at one point I believe called him a Pernell Whitaker with power.
Judah has talked like that his entire career. He's also been an ass for as long as I've seen him on TV as well. The media (it wasn't just Kellerman mind you) also shoved him down our throats leading up to and during his fight with Tszyu, as well, as you mention. Honestly though, his reaction to that loss basically ruined any chance he had of ever being a fighter I could respect. He could have won a thousand fights straight and smiled on camera on command and none of it would matter. That's still one of the lowest, most immature acts I can remember seeing in the last 15 years in this sport.
Yeah, this is not an issue of "Hip hop culture" that Merchant has a problem with. It is the thug persona that Judah tries to emulate. Judah does act like a punk bitch at times and I can see how it could be annoying to Merchant. Although he should keep it to himself. Its not his place to judge.
Thats the point I made earlier about professionalism. He has a right to think what he wants, but its WHEN he choses to do it thats problematic. Still, perhaps it could be argued thats it his role @ HBO to take those kinds of liberties. He's not the PbP guy, he's not the technical analyst. He's the colour guy. I'm not sure there is any ink around what the requirements of his job do or do not entail.
