please. It's guys like you that are trying to denigrate all of the modern fighters because of nostalgia.
Interesting how none of this "nostalgia" seems to help our assessments of guys from the 30s and earlier
It wouldnt help boxers from the 1700s either. Lol Obviously boxing had progressed since the 20s/30s its still based purely on nostalgia to denigrate the present. What's happening is this: fights are harder to make now because of all of these governing bodies, high purses, cable tv networks etc. It makes boxing a pain in the ass. Back in the day you didn't have all this shit so the big fights were made. Secondly, and related to an extent, the top fighters have gotten so clever defensively as a whole ( not saying they are more elusive than pep, Whitaker, Benitez etc). It's a trend now to be cagey and to fight smart so that you have minimal damage to your body going into post retirement, having learned from the mistakes of the past etc and so this alone makes fights are less exciting. Boxing fans equate excitement with ability and in doin so often miss the talent on display by boring fighters. So the cagey styles combined with the lower frequency of big fights makes the era appear shit. However the talent overall is just as high. Mayweather Pacquiao ( although Pacquiao is a throwback in terms of excitement) Hopkins are just as talented as Hagler Hearns and Leonard in aggregate, but the lack of excitement overall between the three is lower and so fans suggest the former were greater. Mayweather isn't appreciated because he's had a few boring fights and he hasn't been in many mega fights but make no mistake, in terms of pure ability as a fighter, hit and not get hit ability...stamina, heart, toughness, he's as good as anyone that has ever laced them up. People hate on him so don't want to admit it, but if you really know the sport and the attributes that help fighters win you'd have no choice but to agree
Lol Sheer brilliance you must mean. Pure truth in that post. Unadulterated truth and insight. You would do well to pay attention as you may learn something. ;)
I disagree that Mayweathwer is underappreciated. For me, he's highly rated but he's not TBE... I think he's the best 130 pounder ever, a top 6 135 pounder, but there's nobody at 140 through 154 that he beat that I wouldn't favor most great fighters over. His resume at 140, 147, and 154 is decent at best.
