I thought it was pretty cut and dry. Margarito was missing and wasn't throwing very much in the first half of the fight, and Williams was landing and throwing. :dunno: He landed like 100+ more punches. Perhaps the biggest mistake Margarito did was giving away the 12th round and not attempting to match Williams firepower punch for punch in a close fight. I actually think Margarito could've won this fight by stoppage if he picked up the activity a bit in the championship rounds.
he wasnt going to stop the kid, he doesnt have that in his arsenal, he rarely landed 2 punches in rapid succession, which would have been needed to knock him down, the reason he didnt put any output in the 12th is because he punched himself out in the 11th when he had his opening
dsimon writes: I don't think Margarito was ever really that good, but there is something satisfying when somoene wins a champions belt like Donato. And there is something vaguely unsettling to see a champion dethroned when he was not really hurt in the fight. Williams won, no doubt though.
My friend, seeing a championship change hands the way it did when Nonito crushed Vic is a RARE occurence in boxing. I agree, it's satisfying and you love boxing more because of it.
yea right..............u should be ashamed of yourself, he clearly won the first 5 rounds easy, tight win on the 6th, and easy 12 round, thats 7, clear rounds to score, get real....!!!
I'm just shocked is all. I don't remember too many times that I was this far removed from the centre. I had Forrest winning the Mayorga rematch and thats the only time I can remember being this different from the rest of you guys. To me, Williams just pitty patted alot and then held on the inside. I saw Margarito landing the cleaner, harder shots both upstairs and down (particularly to the body) and sweeping the final rounds (bar 12). I dunno, I just struggle to see how you all think Williams wins this fight by holding, tapping and whatever (regardless of HBO punchstats) yet seem to vary in other fights. Did Williams land more? Hell yeah. But I didn't see any of those shots being effective at all. He had no luck in getting Margarito's respect, IMO. :dunno:
I got to watch an awesome broadcast of the fight... there was NO commentary. Just a camera and some fights. I thought Williams did most of the work... he also did a good job of hitting Margarito RIGHT back after Tony landed anything. I thought Williams won clearly.
I had Robinson winning both...but those are the fights you compare this too? Seriously? I must have been drunk. I just didn't see it anything close to those. WIlliams was backing up and catching glove 90% of the time. :dunno:
Williams won easily. HOWEVER how many damn warnings did the ref plan on giving for holding??? Everyone that has known me for years knows that my biggest pet peevein boxing is holding- therefore, I am not a Williams fan. The other day I was playing fight night onn the ps3 and my friend kept clinching me so I kicked him in the shin. ________ ARIZONA MEDICAL MARIJUANA DISPENSARY
I thought Williams won easly although he was getting caught late in the fight. Based on the judges scorecards if Margarito would have won the final round he could have gotten a draw. I think he was tired and Williams wasn't as tired as Tony thought he would at that stage.
u had to give williams 7 rounds easily, and there is a great possibility that a judge would be perfectly fair by giving him one of those close rounds that couldve went either way and making it 116-112, come on fightfans, lets learn how to score honestly with no favortism, open your eyes!!
Kevin Iole, Yahoo! Sports: Margarito, 116-112 Tim Smith, New York Daily News: Draw, 114-114 Steve Springer, Los Angeles Times: Draw, 114-114 Bill Dwyre, Los Angeles Times: Margarito, 115-113 Steve Kim, MaxBoxing.com: Margarito, 115-113 Doug Fischer, MaxBoxing.com: Margarito, 115-113 Jerry Magee, San Diego Union-Tribune: Williams, 116-112 Robert Morales, Los Angeles Daily News: Williams, 115-113 Carlos Arias, Orange County Register: Williams, 115-113 David Avila, Riverside Press Enterprise: Draw, 114-114 Francisco Salazar, Fightnews.com: Draw, 114-114 I scored it a draw but I could see Williams winning by 1 round, too. Margarito didn't get enough credit (from the HBO crew and from people here) for blocking a lot of Williams's punches.
WTF?.....Illuminati had it 10 - 2 for Williams!, :eeeek: .......... I wonder how the fuck, scoring can vary from one side of the scale to the other like this?
I agree, and think it was the same case with Mayweather-DLH. I had the same margin (7-5 for the winner) in both fights.
I had the same card, except I had Round 2 for Williams. So I had it 8-4. The one fight that I think is most similar to this fight wwas Tapia vs Medina. I find it hard to give extra credit for defense when neither man really showed that much. Margarito saying that he blocked/deflected Williams shots is misleading in the sense that Williams was throwing 5 punches at a time, with varying speed and power on them. It wasn't as if he threw one hundred single shots and Margarito got out of the way eighty times a round. He would make much of a flurry miss, then get hit with a clean-up uppercut. Or he would eat a light jab followed by a stiff jab, then block the follow-up body punch, etc. Also, I don't hear people mention the fact that Williams looked much worse when he was hit because he took a dangerous backstep and turned with the punch at times. Overall, a good close fight, but one I thought Williams won clearly. I also admit that I have been a Williams fan for a long time, and may very well have been biased.
His offense seems to be his defence in a dazzling, hypnotising way. Even though I think he's an 8-bit backstabbing vindictive arachnid motherfucker, I've got to respect a style and a workrate like that.
If there was only one round difference between your card and Gatti, shouldn't it be 7-5 not 8-4? Rounds 4, 7, 8, 10, 11 is five rounds.
Thanks for that. I actually had a sweep of the first six :eeeek: Holy crap, I didn't realize that. I knw for sure that I didn't give 2 to Margarito, and I overlooked the 4 in there somehow.
