Ortiz never ran. The damn fight only lasted 4 rounds. Ortiz tried to make out with Floyd, but he didn't run.
Hatton had a lot more heart than Cotto though. Willing to take a lot more chances. Hatton really thought he was going to win that fight.
Well what Ortiz was doing Cotto is going to do, whatever you want to call it. Moving to avoid combat is running in my books.
I agree that while Cotto would beat Hatton, Hatton matches up better with Floyd. Hatton tried his best, forced a fight and actually won a few rounds. You need to pressure Floyd. If you give him time to think and room to work, he's in his element, which is exactly what Cotto will do. Cotto is patient, and has a counter puncher's mentality. That's one reason why I don't give today's Pacquiao much chance against Floyd. He lacks the balls and ferocity he used to have, he's not prepared to take the same risks he was prepared to take a few years ago.
I guess you think everyone should use the Gatti defense? Lateral movement is defense, not running. By your definition Floyd runs in about every fight.
Trinidad didn't exactly give up when David Reid floored him. He looked shocked, got up, and hammered him. Same with Vargas, but that was after almost having Vargas out in the first round. It took less resilience, but he still got the job done.
I also think that if there is one fight that gets Pac looking prime, it's Mayweather. He has to be pissed off at the guy, and that's a great motivator when you're getting in shape.
He more or less gave up against Hopkins and Winky though. Resorted to plodding around eating shots, he stopped trying to win both fights.
Winky yes, Hopkins---I don't think I would say that. His footwork deficiency against Hopkins became really apparent, and Hopkins fought the perfect fight on that night.
Tito went through the motions with Hopkins, Wright and Jones. Once he realized he got stung, he tried to last.
It was "lateral movement" without trying to win the exchanges or the rounds. But I know I don't have to explain this to a boxing fan.
Who wins rounds against Mayweather? Saying he didn't try is just being silly. He was just completely out of his league.
Again I'm a Tito hater but this is hyperbole. There were points where Tito walked through heavy artillery from Bernard just to try to land a punch. He definitely tried in that fight, though that might have been the last fight he ever did try in. The Wright and Jones Jr fights were clearly just paydays, not that he'd ever have beaten those guys in a million years anyway.
Steve_Dave - Ortiz ran from Floyd. Reality - He was defensive for parts of one whole round. I know you hate being wrong, but this is one of those times.
Nah, Ortiz had already started avoiding combat. Also, my Mosley example was ignored. The only wrong statement here is "No one ever runs from Floyd." Mosley did, Ortiz did in parts, and just watch, Cotto will.
