Hey, that's a natural progression...perhaps Kellerman will morph into a Merchant later on.

I hated NBC because of the Albert/Pacheco tandem.

CBS on the other hand ruled because of the Ryan/Clancy dynamic duo prowess...they were GREAT, perhaps the best two-punch announcing combo in all of boxing.

Another good one was Alex Wallau on ABC, he was great as well, too bad they teamed him up with the worst announcer in the history of boxing, you know, I friggin' forgot his name, he was a former football player...he was horrible.

    Now THERE"s a Blast from the Past...Alex Wallau was EXCELLENT!!!...GREAT Call:clap: ...

REED has Read Don King's Biography "Only in America-the Life & Crimes of Don King" & Wallau is Featured PROMINENTLY...

He's 1 of the FEW Boxing Guys that HASN'T Been Regurgitated Somewhere Else....

The Football Player was Dan Dierdorf, Hall of Fame Offensive Lineman for the St. Louis Cardinals (REED Only Knows this Cause he's FROM St. Louis:lol: )

I always find these types of topics hilarious as over in the Uk we have to contend with people like, nicky piper, adam smith, duke mckensie, john rawlings, julius francis (Tyson KO2) etc.

The best analogy would be that it's like people complianing on and on about having a bad anchovy in their hamburger while i am starving with very little food on a day to day basis.

    :cheer:

Alex Wallau battled throat cancer, but he successfully beat it.

He became president of ABC television.

I think he still works for them in some behind the scenes capacity.

That's what impresses me about him the most, that he was not really an on-air personality, but when he tried it, he was very good.

Yeah, Dan Dierdorf, lol...he looked so lost in boxing. He's a decent football announcer though.

I used to love Max too but ever since he's come on HBO I've dispised him. I think his problem is he's trying to bring the same style of commentating he used on FNF's to HBO. I don't think I can stomach hearing about the evils of the sanctioning bodies, or the call for true weight classes, and 1 champion per division policies. I just don't want that every week.

Max needs to go back to the guy he was before Atlas sunk his fangs into him.

Al Micheals was a good fight commentator when they used to show fights on ABC. He brought to the table a lot of professionalism and objectivity, the kind you're used to seeing when you watch a basketball or football game.

That was back when boxing was viewed as a legitimate sport. Now it's a spectacle (not saying I don't enjoy it), but it's not like it used to be.

I think the last fight Micheals did was Johnston vs. Castillo and it was a pleasure to watch, although he did seem a little ignorant when it came to recognizing Castillo's subtle and brilliant skills.

    Wallau was excellent.

You really think Merchant was that bad early on? I always thought he was pretty on point. Sure, he's got more "character" now - but back in his younger days he was still pretty insightful, quite objective...and most importantly, TALKED FASTER!

    Peace.

Alex Wallau....a self-published newsletter writer. It was a little different from newspapers, and he was often looked down upon.

He was the internet writer of yesteryear!

    Barry Tompkins

    HOW DO YOU LIKE IT???

I have always preferred Barry Tompkins over Lampley...Tompkins didnt cheerlead for one fighter (or at least he didnt do it as blatantly) as Lamps does...

I always liked Tim Ryan. He was humble, straightforward, and didn't try to be "insightful" like so many other commentators make the mistake of doing.

I really don't see him doing boxing much anymore... I only hear him during tennis grand slams.

Yeah, going back to Lewis' early days he would do that. Heck, he held Frank Bruno's head in place and landed one of the most titanic shots I've ever seen.

    That right uppercut was vicious.

It's a good thing Mike Acey had some honor and didn't want to be an actor a la Montell Griffin/Luis Santana.

Otherwise, Lewis might've had an early DQ on his record.

He hit him 3 times when he took a knee.

I've actually found that the majority of things George says are highly insightful into the sport, and make ALOT of sense.. it's just the way he puts it is usually very poorly worded. I can make perfect sense out of almost any "Foremanism" that has been uttered.

George says "I will NOT calm down!!! THIS man is gonna end up in a PINE BOX!"

Tim Ryan and Gil Clancy on CBS back in the day remains my favorite boxing broadcasting team. Ryan did just enough to keep you informed and Gil Clancy could share insight like none before or since.
