Well, if he's not, then we know the fight is much more difficult to make otherwise.

It took a bit of time for Arum to get something worked out with DLH, who was his number one cash cow and not only left him, but started an automatic rival promotion.

He NEVER got along with Mayweather Jr, and ended up getting bought out for 6 figures of what ultimately turned out to be ANOTHER cash cow (for two fights in one year, est. turn for PBF is 50 mill )

So, what are the odds that Arum would be able to get a Mayweather fight with his last cash cow, which would either have to be totally supported by Arum, or a "secondary" (cough Goldenboy coughcough) promoter with Mayweather's side of things severely cutting into Bob's part of the deal, given that sort of history?

Let's just say the negotiation timeline might resemble what happened when ARod undercut his agent and talked to the Yankess directly. If Cotto wants a certain fight, he'd better say so, otherwise it's going to be what Arum wants best for his best interests, not Cotto.

I'd like to see this fight but i would favour Floyd quite strongly....

....a fight i am intrigued by would be Floyd-Paul Williams....Williams is probably a big win or two away from earning his shot (creating enough interest for the fight)...but his style offers an awkward night for anyone, even Mayweather.....for the time being though, if Floyd is gonna fry any more fish, there are bigger fish out there (.........maybe not literally though)

It's not Floyd's fault that he fights in an era where most guys only have about 40-50 fights on their resume.

Era for Era Floyd is a top 5 all time guy, NO DOUBT (especially if he were to beat Cotto and retire)!

Mayweather to be consider 10-15-20 all time great he has to beat alot more than Miguel Cotto.....he has to beat Margarito, Williams, Mosley...

i know most of those guys are NOT GREAT but they are the best the welterweight/jr. welter has to offer..

with guys like SRR, Leonard, Duran, Armstrong, ALi, Pep, the other Leonard, Greb, Chavez, Whitaker, Jofre, Hagler, Hearns, Monzon, Napoles etc....TOP 5,10,15 is a NOPE for Mayweather jr..

Because I only think it's a given that he'll win, I don't know it. They have to actually have the fight to prove who's better.

    That's why.

It's not...but Mayweather like every other fighter has to make a decision is it about the money or is it about all time status....he said on 24/7 I HAVE ENOUGH money...so now he has to step up...and fight the COTTO, WILLIAMS, MARGARITA, etc..IF HE WANTS to be all time great he has to clean shit out...

He hasn't done enough to be top 5-10-15 all time..not even close...Chavez didn't fought in an era were fighters had 100 fight...but he still had 100 fights....same for Duran...

Mayweather is OBJECTIVELY certainly ahead of Hagler, Hearns, Monzon, Napoles,....just to name four.

the problem is that fanboys don't know how to objectively rank an active/recent fighter.

Floyd won titles from 130lbs to 154lbs, remains undefeated and was the true champion or beat the true champions from 4 of those divisions.

Yeah but Ray Leonard only had about 34 fights and you still rank him in the top 10-15..so it's not just about the number of fights even from your perspective...

Names sound much better on a resume years after the fact.

    Floyd has beaten...

De La Hoya, Corrales, Castillo, Hatton, Judah...

He's beaten the top names in his era and that's all you can ask of a fighter...

Nobody under 160 right now can beat floyd, imo.

The fact remains that he is, and will always be a fighter that is rooted against and disliked because of the personality that he exudes to the public.

But the fact is almost certain that Floyd Mayweather is one of the most skilled boxers of recent times.

He has shown a dependable chin, great stamina, and unparalelled ring generalship, speed and defense...while amassing an undefeated record amongst four divisions against more than "credible" opposition.

Cotto is a great fighter...but hasn't been in the ring with anyone even close to as good as Mayweather.

    Floyd has.

I hope Floyd retires, simply because I hate his guts, and it seems as if he is getting better and hitting his prime.

where is a young, prime Tommy Hearns when ya need him?:dunno:

Boxing fans don't seem to know how to define "challenge" anymore. Everyone is so hypnotized by record that we think in terms of 12-0 or 26-0 or 45-0 as if therein lies the difficulty of a given fight, and it's worth in terms of victory or loss.

The reason Floyd cannot be considered a top 5 or maybe even top 10 fighter all time is because cleaning out a division IS important, and it's important because records DON'T define challenges by themselves. The reason it's so hard to rule a division is because it means you have to fight lots of 22-4 or 42-18 guys or guys who don't always win but who punch like a sledgehammer or freak guys who are way too tall or guys who some nights come in and have unbelievable stamina, or maybe you yourself have an off night, or a hand injury, etc., etc.

Fights like Williams, Margarito, Cotto are these types of challenges. Forget about their records or if one of them got beat once, just look at one small aspect of what makes them challenging for Floyd - the physical nature of the fight. Cotto is bigger & stronger than Floyd. Williams is freakishly taller than Floyd and has unreal stamina. Margarito has a great workrate, great chin, and is also quite tall and physically imposing. That's just 3. There's piles more.

Haven't boxing fans got it through their heads yet that it's often the guy you maybe didn't quite expect that dethrones the king or shows him to be beatable? That's why we fight the fights, because there is no GIVEN.

I think if Williams fought Floyd 4 times he'd decision Floyd in one of them. I think Margarito would TKO or decision Floyd one out of every 10 fights.
Cotto is tougher, it is hard to place him, he may have a 30% shot at it.

So based on my admitedly off-the-cuff numbers, there is something like a 65% chance Floyd gets beat within just those 3 fights. And that doesn't even mean they are BETTER fighters than Floyd, skill wise or career wise. It just means they could very possibly beat Floyd, and that's why we fight the fights.

I am sorry, but popping into a division, getting a good win or 2, then moving on will NEVER, that's right NEVER give you all time status, sorry. Floyd may be all-time pedigree, but he appears unwilling to gut out all time status because it means fighting low reward fights, and a lot of them, in a relatively short period of time and perservering through all of them. I don't even blame him. It take a rare kind of athlete to fight when you don't need to anymore, train your ass off, and fight HARD every night, against TOUGH opponents when the money isn't great and the risk is strong, just to prove all-time status.

If you're going to say that about DLH...um...and talk about SRL...

I don't want to keep going in this line.

It reminds me of my dad downplaying Hopkins saying he was no Hagler, when I specifically recall him defending Hagler when others guys would say he's no Monzon. It's truly a rose-colored effect.

Mayweather needs to fight a couple more elite fighters at 147 or 154 to even be considered as an ATG.

You just explained why Ray Leonard was never an All-time great. He was all about money, he never stayed in a division, he picked exactly the time he wanted to fight guys, and he limited his number of fights. Yet he STILL gets looked upon as that kind of great, because of who he fought. If Hearns fell flat after their first fight; if he DOESN'T struggle with Duran the first time; if he doesn't have a long layoff before Hagler...we're talking about an immensely talented guy who got good breaks and made money, closer to what we consider DLH today.

Don't tell me that being the champion of one division, then beating the champion of another division, means nothing. That's arguing for the sake of arguing. I simply disagree with that.

Floyd would knock Cotto out like he did Hatton. Cotto is an easier matchup for Floyd.

The real test for Floyd is Paul Williams but the risk isn't worth it for him.
