Every intelligent fighter gets caught at some point. There isn't a person on this list who hasn't been caught by big shots. What's amazing is that during Jones' run, he barely got hit FLUSH - and his defensive skills weren't that great either.

phonetap didn't know there was a correlation between human intelligence and getting caught with a big punch.

Oh sure: we all gotta go at some point. But here's the thing. Intelligent fighters like Larry Holmes and Tunney got dropped and almost stopped during their primes. BUT LOOK at the guys that did it to them: Shavers and Dempsey: the sort of guys who could, albeit momentarily, overwhelm a smarter fighter.

Roy barely got hit flush? Well, Del Valle floored him. Tarver hit him flush in their first fight...and then Roy got knocked the flush out in their 2nd meeting. Okay then, he went a lot of fights without getting hit too much: against a lot of non-descript or past-its-best opponents, or against guys like Toney who wasn't at his best or Hopkins who wasn't in his pomp just yet.

Shit, Evander got KO'd by Toney because he wasn't physically capable of fighting the fight he KNEW would beat Toney. He did it for 2 rounds, then he plutzed. And Evander was never the "smartest" of fighters.

Roy wasn't dumb, but he wasn't Pea WHittaker neither.

Is this human intelligence or fighters intelligence????

Cos I am sure Roy couldn't spell his own fucking name.

There probably isn't a connection between human intelligence and getting smacked out. But this is boxing, are you talking ring smarts or are you just talking gen human intel? Or are you just talking shit again??

And, for the record, REED used the word "INTELLECT" in his post. So the rhubric is well and truly skewed at this stage.

Shit....if this is the case, Roland La Starza and Vitali Klitschko have the best intellects:dunno: :dunno: :dunno: :dunno:

Definitely ring smarts and Jones was very ring smart. I'd say he was pretty smart outside the ring as well - made a lot of dough for little risk.

masanori tokuyama was a smart fighter. so was sven ottke.

they're both stinkers, but both knew how to win w/ their limited talent.

Roy is ok, and yes, Roy had a certain radar in the ring. But I would never, ever, put Roy in with guys like P Whit, Benitez, Tunney, Holmes. Willy Pep never had a muscle on his body, and even after his back was broken, he could still slip shots like he wasn't there. As soon as Roys reflexes dimmed a bit, he was getting KO'd for fun. His brains were secondary to his legs, no doubt. And thats what puts him outside the best. Thats all.

Then How about the Name "Virgil Hill"??:dunno:

After EATING Right Hands to the Grill for 3 Rounds,Hill Sees Roy Wind Up that Right YET AGAIN,so he Ducks & Places Himself N PERFECT Range for the BodyShot that Eventually BROKE his Rib...

Roy BAITED Hill...The OVERHAND Right that Hill was EXPECTING Never Arrived....

The Tarver KO is 1 of the More FORTUNATE Scenarios U'll EVER See...Roy's Defense WAS UP;Tarver's Shot just Went INSIDE of Roy's Defense (1/8th of an Inch in EITHER the Direction & the Shot is BLOCKED)...

    AND,Tarver's Eyes were CLOSED...

jones' defense was unorthodox from a technical standpoint. he was so damn fast, which enabled him to pull straight back or dodge down without paying for it.

look at a guy like hopkins, who has also diminished in terms of speed, power and reflexes, but his tight and well schooled defense enables him to do what he does even at age 43.

hopkins also knows how and where to place his punches, unlike jones who now only throws flashy but ineffective punches.

hopkins is the smartest fighter of the past decade or two imo.

Excacltly, people confuse Jones' speed for being rinsmart. Jones is a smart as a pea.

Tito was a great thinker. He thought very hard exactly where to land on the canvas when Hopkins knocked him out. That was some serious skill. Seriously though, early in his career Tito was a thinker.

good points. also, when tito fought winky, he was also very smart in pretending like he was still in the fight when in reality, he had given up after the 2nd round.

So Roy got KO'd by a guy whose eyes were closed. Like I said, a chin helps.

I never said Roy was dumb.

He had a cuteness, any fighter should have it if they are ANY good.

I just don't think he is THE MOST intelligent.

yea. at least an old whitaker knew how to climb off the canvas and take an ass whupping vs. a young tito.

jones got KOed by a not so young and not that great of a talent in tarver, subsequently getting stretched by a guy who's known more for his losses than wins.
