I agree. The Graduate is mediocre as fuck. Shouldn't even make the top 100. However, I've never seen it considered THE greatest American film.

It's usually Citizen Kane or GF 1 that's considered the greatest American film. I've also seen Vertigo at the top of some lists.

In any case, all three of those films take a wet, steaming hot shit on The Graduate.

The Graduate I think was considered groundbreaking because of the subject matter ... I agree it hasn't aged as well as say, Midnight Cowboy

When AFI named the "100 years, 100 movies" list in 1998 it was ranked #7, some group of critics made their own top 10 list and placed it at #1 which was met with almost universal groans from movie fans.

    Nah, how so?

Brokeback is a love story... Midnight Cowboy is about corrupted conscience and the gutters of urban existence

I'm fucking with you. I only said that because there was definitely more than a "friendship" between Joe Buck and Ratso.

I agreed when I first saw it, but I watched it again and liked it a lot more. I like it as a series of short vigenettes more than your typical beginning/middle/end movie.

no - you honestly have some long-standing psychological tic where you perceive that there is some clear consensus out there somewhere, THE "received opinion" on a particular movie, & a lot of your posts are you railing against this phantom "received opinion". you go on about some movie being clearly overrated or clearly underrated, i.e. "THE received opinion on this movie is wrong", & assume that there is a definite consensus about each movie's quality.

in fact, there is no single definitive "received opinion" on any movie - a precise consensus on which movie is a "great", which movie is "not great but only an 80s cult classic", what movie is "innovative for its genre & just a bit great", etc. all there is is lots of people who have all watched movies & have opinions, some of whom are professional critics & publish reviews, & some of whom give awards. yes there are general trends - generally, Boogie Nights is seen as good, & Suburban Commando is seen as poor. but there's no definite opinion on exactly how great every single movie is. it's complex - like all social reality - & it changes over time. shawshank redemption; Leon; farewell my concubine. is there a single "received opinion" on exactly how good & what is the exact significance of each of these movies? has the movie-watching community definitively agreed what is the ranking of these three movies? no. generally, each of these 3 movies is seen as having a lot of merits, a few weaknesses, but you can't say what the precise overall consensus is on them - because there isn't one.

so stop getting surprised when people don't see the same phantom, precise "received opinion" out there on the horizon that you have imagined for yourself. - you would make it easier for yourself if you use tangible indicators, e.g. whether a movie deserved an oscar nomination, or whether it deserves its rottentomatoes % rating, or its inclusion on a particular list

I was thinking something similar to this, though not necessarily relating significantly to Xplosive. Who determines what film is great and what is their criteria? Also who decides which of those films are overrated, and likewise what is their criteria for that? Are they going to factor in things like originality, acting, direction, cultural impact etc or will it just be based on whether or not the person who considers it overrated simply didn’t like it. IMO this whole thread concept is to broad to seriously debate.

I don’t know know wtf a “received opinion” is, but obviously there’s a general consensus on how highly a movie is regarded. Stop being pricks.

Until Professor X taps into every sentient mind on earth and tells us exactly what the consensus is on Terminator 2 I think it’s fine to gauge how highly something is regarded and people can agree, disagree and discuss. An ideal place to do this would be a forum dedicated to discussion of tv and film...

If most people say a film is good and you thought it was bad then you think it’s overrated. It ain’t that fuckin complicated.

A lot of pseudo intellectual hall monitoring going on here.

Yeah that wouldn’t be fucking complicated if that’s what was stated in the fucking opening post, but it wasn’t. What was stated was kinda...fucking complicated.

the poster in question isn't doing that, & that isn't what he's been doing in this movie forum, for years.

    - i don't say this very often on this board, but: fuck off

Maybe if you left your pagoda more often the concept of the consensus on the street wouldn’t seem so foreign, Round Eye.
