I didn't see it live, but I really felt bad for Benitez watching that Leonard KO. He was totally outboxed that night and took a beating towards the end of the fight.

And of course seeing Holmes-Ali.. I could see why everyone was sad after seeing that.

That is one of the more disturbing KOs... Incredible fight, though, from both men... Pryor was amazing

I was at Jones/Tarver 2 in person. Nothing will ever top that for me.

Robinson, not Johnson (although Johnson did get fucked up too). I agree with Sly though, Robinson was a hard working guy who got his big break and won a version of the world title in an upset and managed to defend it a few times. Hamed was in a different league and utterly humiliated him (maybe Naz's best ever performance) in front of Robinson's hometown fans. You had to feel a bit sorry for the guy by the end of it.

Jones was never a huge favourite of mine but the guy was so dominant it all came as a massive shock. After that, boxing was sorta never the same - anything could happen. A real "WTF?" moment.

Though I always suspected his chin wasn't all that. I never said it on Secondsout or Fightworld because I would have basically been run off the board, but I always thought it. I thought he disguised shots he took really well and it seemed like nothing phased him - but a couple of times I saw him go slightly crosseyed from an innocuous shot and thought "there's something not right about that chin". It's just that no one ever could land on him, plus his cutting weight after the Ruiz fight, and Tarvers shot, brought it all to the fore.

There, I said it. Anyway I'm selling out and moving to another board, see you at Tam Tam's site.:tick:

lewis - Rahman I (lewis - Rahman II one of my most satisfying KOs)
hatton - Mayweather (hatton still undefeated, and you thought maybe, just maybe)

but really nothing compares to douglas - Tyson. to a little kid growing up in england in the 1980s, Tyson was one of the major icons your worldview was oriented around, up there with Margaret thatcher, jesus, and Superman. still feel sad now, and every other Tyson loss is just a flashback to first hearing the news that Tyson had been knocked out by a nobody in japan.

I don't think I have this kind of experience. Wlad vs Sanders or Lewis vs Rahman might be closest but I wasn't THAT big a fan back then.

Roy-Tarver II was big too. Even though I used to be a 'Roy-hater', I thought almost for real that he was unbeatable. It was a shocker

Yeah I thought Roy Jones was Kryptonian. I was about to anoint him the GOAT as I expected him to dominate Tarver in the rematch and then retire. I would have put him ahead of Robinson after that fight. I had no doubt that he'd win and win easily. Then boom....he's flat on his back with his head through the ropes with his eyes rolled back into his head. I didn't even see the punch ( must have blinked). I see him struggle to get up and stumble into the ropes on the other side head first and then, the ref wave it off and then I see Tarver punch out a cameraman. It was surreal. I was in a daze and wasn't sure if I was tripping or not.

People call me a Mayweather nuthugger etc but my fandom of Floyd is nothing compared to my fandom of Roy at the time

so all that respect and admiration you had for him just evaporated because he got knocked out? that's fucked up. no wonder nobody will fight each other.

where does he not? the sum total of what he said is that everything rjj was to him was suddenly gone after he was knocked out. in other words, his invincibility mattered more than anything. think about the implications of that. it explains a lot about the state of affairs in the sport.

REED, didn't mean any offense (although it may have come across that way). I think i have experienced a similar sense of loss when Tyson lost. i just think as fans we would be better off if we were not drawn into the always fake illusion that any fighter is invincible or without peer.

    No Offense Taken Doub...

You Spoke of REED's "Respect and Admiration EVAPORATING" 1nce Roy Suffered Defeat, and that COULDN'T Be Fuuuuuuuuuurther from the Truth...Again, REED Spoke of FAMILIAL, "Big Brother" Type of Feelings for the Dude...As CRUSHING as It Would Be to Watch Your Big Brother Get his Ass Kicked, the "Respect and Admiration" NEVER Ceases...That Spot in REED's Heart was ETCHED Already, More than 25 Years Ago...

You Make it Sound Like Some Type of BANDWAGON Shit, Which Certainly WAS NOT REED's M.O., in Regards to Roy Jones...

You Obviously MISSED the Part Where REED SERIOUSLY Wanted to Be a Sacrificial Lamp for Roy, to Get his 50th Win...After Getting Bounced Around by Tarver, Glen Johnson and Tarver Again, REED SERIOUSLY Worried Roy Wouldn't WIN Another Fight...And Again, REED Would've GLADLY Taken an Ass Whipping from "Big Brother" in That Pursuit...

REED Got a Chance to See Roy Up Close a Couple Years Back (Mikey Garcia-Juan Man Lopez HBO Card) and it was Like he Was STILL the Pre-Tarver Roy, in REED's Eyes...In That Moment, REED Couldn't Have Been Any MORE Giddy, Even if Roy Had Retired Undefeated...& Even After Seeing Garcia Destroy JuanMa and Seeing Terrance Crawford in Person for the 1st Time (Not to Mention George Foreman and a Couple Others), the HIGHLIGHT of REED's Evening was the 20-30 SECONDS he Got to See Roy Jones Up Close, In Person...

I was 12 when Tyson lost to Douglas and at least for American kids of my generation (I can't speak for our Euro and Canadian comrades) Tyson was like superman... Kids would compare impossible things to Mike Tyson and talk about the KO of Spinks ("the fight was shorter than the national anthem!") like the way old-time kids probably talked about Babe Ruth... He was probably the last boxer (Bo Jackson was probably the last athlete) to come along who had that kind of Paul Bunyan vibe where the idea of him failing was utterly preposterous and his feats were larger than life... That sort of hero worship sort of vanished by the 90s with more media saturation of sports reporting... Anyway, I didn't see the fight but I remember the day after it happened was a Monday and we had February vacation... A classmate of mine lived a street over and he stopped by my house to get something (either he was borrowing something from me or I had borrowed something from him) and for whatever reason I mentioned Mike Tyson in some sort of vain like "there's as much a chance of such and such a thing happening as Mike Tyson getting beat" or whatever and my classmate said "you didn't hear?! He lost!" ... I said "wasn't he fighting that Buster guy?" and then I told him there's no way, he was putting me on, etc. ... He swore and told me to check the paper... I couldn't believe it... We had one of those free trial HBO subscriptions at the time and so the next weekend they showed the fight and I watched it in disbelief ... It was surreal watching him get floored... Buster Douglas became a folk hero for 5 minutes and then became a punchline when he showed up all fat for Holyfield and got pasted...

Marquez-Casamayor. Casa was probably my favorite fighter in terms of when they were active. I was a big fan of Marquez as well mainly just because of how good he was and I was happy to see Joel hanging in there. I was hoping he could steal some of the last few rounds and eek out a decision, then wham! Marquez is underrated as a puncher.

Hopkins-Trinidad. Trinidads run was kind of the story in boxing and it was sad to see it come to that conclusion.
