I think Yes have one of the greatest rhythm sections (Chris Squire / Alan White) in music history...and who else but a prog-rock band could create a double-album consisting of just 4 songs based on the shastric scriptures of an Indian yogi....and then play it live, in its entirety before it's even been released?? :bears:
You can't fuck with minds like that.

Genesis - awesome band, just awesome. In fact, I probably like them more than I like Pink Floyd now.
A band so adept and creative at re-creating themselves when one or more major members ups and leaves...and then becomes more popular by adapting to musical changes in the world??
Phil Collins - majorly underrated drummer, too. (check out his work with '70s jazz-fusion outfit, Brand X for confirmation.

    Not neccessarily. :nono:
That said bunch of socialist, spotty, sickly, wank-stains might be able to render a version of 'The Gates Of Delirium' with their stolen instruments...'Garage-Prog'.

    god, Genesis was fucking horrible

who cares if Phil Collins plays well if all he is playing is horrible, shit music?

Larry Carlton is one of the most remarkable guitarists in history, but unless he's playing on a Steely Dan record, there's no reason to ever listen to him because he makes horrible, lifeless music on his own

Sounds like it might be less soul-deadening than the real McCoy

cdoggshit - you're just jealous because your jazz-boys are eclipsed in versatility and mastery of musical instruments.
    Carl Palmer > Jack DeJohnette
    Chris Squire > Jaco Pastorius
    Rick Wakeman > Chick Corea
    etc, etc

Plus they made a fortune from it....something that always rankles with jazzers: guys playing lights-out to an audience of about 20, night-after-night...

    Legend.

Hut, you've probably not even heard any prog music - you've just seen some wanker like Paul Morley talking about on some BBC TV rockumentary about it all...

Listening to some 10cc last night on the way home. :bears:

UK's answer to (and more accessible than) Steely Dan in the 'smart-ass' stakes, but without the annoyingly, nasal Donald Fagan and daft jazz-directions that piss everyone off about The Dan.

    god no

and the comparison to Steely Dan is bizarre

They are more like ELO without the strings

Hmmmm, strange...and yet they've always been considered the UK-equivalent of Steely Dan - even the press back in the 70s started that off.
But I suppose the closest you can get with a comparison is Sparks (one of my alltime favorites, and if you dont like any of their stuff, then I know you aren't for real and taking the piss)
Anyway, back to 10cc, I suppose in the USA there was little need for 'clever-music' in the mid-70s, not to mention 'clever-music' that would occasionally make fun of dumb music that actually was in demand. The fact that 10cc were responsible for some of the best pop music to come out of the 70s, and yet some of the blandest, most generic and faceless shit to come out of the 80s is a weird chronological miracle, IMO.
10cc's first four albums belong in every serious pop music collection - if you can get over your anti-UK-oddity-band PoV of this band, you might appreciate them more.

Ahhhh, now then, Electric Light Orchestra!! :bears:
John Lennon once said that's what The Beatles wouldve ended up souding like if they'd carried on. Arguably the world candidate for 'Most Grossly Misinterpreted And Most Unjustly Despised' band of the past 30 years. IMO, one of the best, most creative, inventive and productive bands of the 70s, a band of truly giant stature and nearly limitless potential; no other band in that decade could put out excellent records with a minimal amount of filler as consistently as ELO did since about 1973.

I'm just stunned by both of these paragraphs... stunned

Especially the ELO one... Jeff Lynne has talent, but goddamn, they made some truly hideous records

Goddamit!! How did I miss Hut's Wings reference?
"The band The Beatles could've been!"

Wings - extremely interesting, always diverse, always melodic, rarely banal, and, of course, plenty of various moods and hooks. Far too many people mistake of dismissing him as 'too sappy' or 'too sentimental'. He overdid the ballds a bit, but it's usually compensated with multiple entries into other genres: country, blues, boogie-woogie, pop rock, bluegrass, even heavy-rock on occasion.

    I've got a bike.
You can ride it if you like.

It's got a basket, a bell that rings,
and things to make it look good.

I'd give it to you if I could, but I borrowed it.

    Now, you are just trolling:mut:

Wings was horrendous... McCartney's cuteness run amok, complete with non-musician wife on backing "vocals" and "keyboards"

I don't mind most of the bands mentioned in this thread to varying degrees. Some are clearly better than others but there are good tracks from all.

An hour of studio performances by David Bowie on BBC2 right now. That geezer was a genius of the highest order.
