Phil Collins is a great drummer, as is Chester Thompson

what you know about evaluating such things could be written on the head of a pin

rather than simply copying and pasting a technical assessment, why not post your favourite song where Collins contributed to the drumming

Better drummer: Phil Collins or Dave Grohl?

rather than simply trolling, why not contribute a legitimate opinion on something?

"Phil Collins is a great drummer"... yeah, what an incredibly TECHNICAL thing to say... clearly copied and pasted

Grohl is a very fine rock drummer, but Phil Collins is a lot more skilled and versatile... I can't see Grohl hacking it in a jazz or R&B context... Collins could and has without any doubt

Neither one of them creates songs I have any interest in hearing, however

i did say my opinion...this thread is all about opinion but you're the one going around saying whether or not someone is technically good or not...even though that information is everywhere on the internet
his drumming is neither interesting or creative to tickle my fancy.....technically competent, sure..but what use is that if it's not a pleasure to listen to...there are zero songs i would listen to just to hear Phil Collins drumming

That's the thing about judging musicians. Are they really only capable of playing the things they play in the bands they play in? I would guess Grohl can play many styles, just because he's in a rock band doesn't mean he is incapable of playing jazz.

playing rock music is a lot easier than playing jazz... it is what it is

When musicians have command that exceeds the form they are playing in, it will ultimately come out in their playing... there's nothing Dave Grohl has ever played that would indicate even a vague familiarity with jazz... he's a good drummer, but it is what it is... when a dude is capable of more, it comes out

I have already said this roughly 500 times in this thread

the analogy, again, as I previously stated in this thread: "what good are the skills of Picasso and Dali if they only painted Thomas Kinkaid paintings?"

You said the two drummers were "talentless"... it's simply incorrect. Talent, they have in abundance... the USE of the talent is a different story (which is where "tickling my fancy" comes into play) ... Talent and what is done with that talent are two completely different things

I think Grohl's Father played in a jazz band, or was part of the jazz scene anyway, but not sure whether he taught Dave jazz drum rudiments.

of course, but Grohl may have years of practicing jazz drumming and we are just unaware of it.

You're a drummer Jimmy? You know what I hate? How everyone wants to play guitar and I can never find good drummers to jam with. I wish more people played drums.
