surely creativity is a big part of talent, though? :scratcher:
a songwriter has to write a good song to be considered talented...surely the same with musicians and the music they contribute to the song

it's like if Picasso had skills at painting but lacked any imagination and just smeared turds all over the canvas, is he still talented?

Dave Grohl, although he doesn't play anything amazingly difficult or mind-blowing and technical, he "gets it" about drumming.
Obviously his major influence is John Bonham - but Grohl, at best, is solid, it sounds good and it fits the music.

I love Dave Grohl as a drummer, he was absolutely CRUCIAL to Nirvanas success, who are one of my favourite bands. Plus I liked what he done with QOTSA even though I'm not a massive fan of that band. However, I fucking despise the Foo Fighters, as Roll says - generic shit. Fucking awful.

you really think so? in what way?

so much changed from Bleach to Nevermind, how can you attribute the success purely on the drumming, assuming he even wrote the drum part? :dunno:

Grohls power and sense of groove was far more suited to Nirvanas sound than Chad Channings drumming. Channing was ok but pretty basic, it worked on Bleach because Cobain hadn't developed yet as a songwriter. There's some demos floating around where they had Channing drumming on songs which would later go on Nevermind, obviously just before they fired him, and you can immediately tell the difference. It sounds sloppy and lacking in power, they needed Grohl to take the songs to the next level.

Obviously Grohl is not the ONLY reason, by the way. Kurts progression as a songwriter was the main factor, but Grohls contribution was massive to that band, and shouldn't be understated.

Ah’m surprised Jimmy has the time tae listen tae music… A dee in the life o’ Jimmy:

‘Shit! Six A.M. ‘Match of the Day’ themed alarm bell’s gone off! I only went to bed half an hour ago after watching the of the Tokyo Sumo Championships. Best get to work fast but first I have to set my triple recording of Sky Sports 1, 2 and 3 on the Virgin Tivo and ESPN and ESPN Classic on my Sky set-up… can’t wait to see how the Irish Hurling game finishes.

Oops! Here we are, just listened to Radio 5’s cricket on train whilst simultaneously reading the Sports Section of 5 assorted broadsheets whilst keeping a dutiful eye on my iPhone screen which is showing the recorded ‘Lumberjack Axe-Off’. Here we are at work… time for a hard day’s statistical roundup of all the events I’ve watched and plan to watch. I have the data recorded here on a Gantt Chart which is beautifully presented in QPR colours. Somehow I manage to watch, read and listen to all of the plethora of world sport events which are either occurring or have occurred during the ‘working’ day. In hindsight perhaps being an Air Traffic Controller wasn’t such a good choice of career.

It’s dark now, on my way home ready for a feast of football – Oho! what’s this? It appears that there is an under 10 field hockey match going on underneath the spotlights at the astro turf pitches. I can’t miss this! Forty five minutes later the game is over and I can continue to make my way home. I suppose I was a bit harsh on that one lad when I bellowed at him:

‘You’re letting your whole team down you discordinated tw*t!’

Home now, don’t have time to eat. Must tap out a few messages to Fightbeat whilst I watch the highlights of the England vs New Zealand third rugby test. Must try and get to bed earlier… it’s 2 A.M. already. Nearly there, just brushing my teeth and flicking through my recordings – I’m down to 1 and 2 percent respectively on available smartbox space! Must try and knock it down a bit – I’ll just quickly watch this 3 hour NFL game…

Shit! Six A.M. ‘Match of the Day’ themed alarm bell’s gone off! I only went to bed half an hour ago etc. etc.’

Alter Bridge is literally exactly like Creed, but gayer. Sounds impossible, but it's true.
