I'm not too good with electronic genres, but I liked Matthew Dear, CFCF & John Talabot's, albums this year. In fact all three made good albums last year, too. I'm guessing the first two are 'house' (Dear is kinda a house producer doing Bowie) and CFCF might be 'chill wave' or 'new age' or, like, something.:headscratch: Anyway their real genre is 'good'.

I'm not one of those guys who breaks down metal into a hundred sub genres. I call it all metal. Iron Maiden is one of my favorite bands ever, are you going to tell me they're not metal also? Iced Earth has produced some of the best pure metal ever, Dark Fagus.

Yep I got a bunch of those. Good stuff.

Thanks Hut, I just sampled those 3 guys on Amazon and I liked what I heard. I'm going to check out their stuff. That CFCF sounds kind of like the genre I call Jazz/Lounge.

Nah, Im just messing with you.
I will have to check out those bands you listed as I'm not familiar with them.

Of course, I love the 1970s 'heavy/hard-rock' with a passion, but my 'metal creed' is more old-school: Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Motorhead, The Scorpions, Diamond Head, Van Halen, Ratt, Quiet Riot, W.A.S.P, Motley Crue, Slayer, Metallica, Anthrax, Megadeth, Kreator, Sepultura.

Unfortunately, its about this time, late 1980s, early 1990s where as you say, the sub-genres all started and I kind of lost track and touch with it all. :dunno:

Arguably one of the best live bands of alltime at their peak:

    hardly

I hate broadway theatrics... adding distorted guitar to it doesn't make it any more enjoyable or any less broadway

I feel the same way about Billy Joel... Marvin Hamlisch as a rock star

how do you mean? name bands that play well live?

Hell, Queen played well live... I just hate their fucking music

Yes played great live... they have about 5 songs I like

Just because a band can play doesn't mean I like their music... Dream Theater can play, but I'd rather get kneecapped than listen to a minute of their ponderous shite

That seems to mean different things to different people

I couldn't pick one record for each decade for the whole of music, it'd be hard enough if you narrowed it down

I'd have to pick about ten from each decade

My favorite one day could be my eighth favorite a month later... so much depends on mood

    Just sticking to "Rockish" music...

50s: Not really an "album" decade... Rock music was very much a singles game back then... some of the old rock music has its pleasures... I like Bo Diddley, a bit of Little Richard, even some Elvis has its charms, the cheesy stuff like Bill Halley and His Comets is fun in spurts... outside of a Bo Diddley compilation, there's nothing I'd want in long-form album mode

60s (in no particular order) : The Band, Revolver, Sweetheart Of The Rodeo, Abbey Road, Beggar's Banquet, Let It Bleed, The Gilded Palace Of Sin, The Best of Sam & Dave, The History Of Otis Redding, Lady Soul, Pet Sounds, Highway 61 Revisited, Music From Big Pink, Blonde on Blonde, Hot Rats, Something Else, Sly and The Family Stone Greatest Hits.... in addition to those, this was also a big era for singles... Roy Orbison, The Rascals and singles by some of the artists who made the above albums, like The Byrds... I like some of the Spector girl group songs by The Crystals, The Ronettes, etc. ... Many good Motown singles as well... I also enjoy really cheesy singles from this time

70s (same) : Exile On Main St., Physical Graffiti, Blood On The Tracks, Stagefright, St. Dominic's Preview, every Steely Dan record from Can't Buy A Thrill to Aja, Tonight's The Night, Sticky Fingers, All Things Must Pass, Waka/Jawaka, The Grand Wazoo, American Beauty, Europe '72, Low, Station to Station, Lodger, The Wild/Innocent and The E Street Shuffle, Fresh, There's a Riot Goin On, One Nation Under A Groove, Mothership Connection, Funkentelechy vs. The Placebo Syndrome, Funky Kingston, Rock Of Ages, Allman Brothers at Fillmore East (sentimental reasons, really) ... like the 60s, this is an era of numerous wonderful, cheesy singles that I also enjoy

80s : Hardly anything I would listen to with any regularity, but if I had to pick things I like from the 80s... Double Nickels On The Dime, Appetite For Destruction, Master Of Puppets, not much else... there would lots of individual songs that I like or enjoy or find amusing/catchy/cheesy, but nothing in terms of albums, really

90s: Superunknown, Badmotorfinger, Dirt, that AIC album with the three legged dog on the cover... like the 80s, there would also be a number of indivdual songs here and there that I really enjoyed, but not much else in terms of a whole album

00s: Songs for the Deaf... a handful of songs here and there

10s: I haven't heard any even remotely mainstream music that I've liked at all in this decade... not a bit, it's beyond terrible... I can't remember the last time I liked a single

Don't get me wrong, I like this album, but to me, it would have been better if he'd cut half of it out and made one album... there's some real filler in there... I prefer Innervisions and Talking Book, personally... Impossible guy to dislike if you have ears, I think... One of the greatest singers ever, fabulous musician and songwriter and no one has ever been able to get away with cheesiness the way he did... you BELIEVE him, you know?

60's - Piper At The Gates of Dawn

70's - Aja and Dark Side of the Moon (I will finally admit this album has now grown on me over the past year or so)

80's - God dammit this is a hard decade, Chill Out by The KLF JUST misses out by 2 months. I'll have to come back to this one. Could Selected Ambient Works 85-92 by Aphex Twin count even though it was released in the 90's? Guess not. Shame.

90's - I have to say Nevermind, it's the album which had the most impact on me at the time, really just a great pop record. There are some fantastic albums from this decade though, in a lot of genres. Good shout Magus on Endtroducing, awesome stuff.

00's - Really dries up here. Guess I'll say Whatever People Say I am, That's What I'm Not which is a legitimately good album, regardless of their age. The subject matter is a bit silly and there's a lot of posturing but the production on 2001 really is brilliant.

10's - NOTHING. LITERALLY FUCK ALL
