despise is too strong a word

I like Marr as a guitarist. Morissey's huge gangster latino following in LA is really weird  just adds to my bemusement

Morrissey is a weird but wonderful song writer. Himself and Marr were a great a duo.

All that other shit in press I ignore. Most football players, musicians, actors etc turn out to be wankers

Wasn't aware of that. They must have glossed over the homo part in the documentary.

sure, but your ideas about someone "not having an idea" are well established as having basically nothing to do with music at all and everything to do with your perception (right or wrong) of the people creating it and the environment where they are doing so

because how else would you be able to accurately determine the skill level of the guitarist?

there's nothing wrong with Garage band skills in the context of that music... because, frankly, it isn't really necessary to have much more than that... it is not complicated stuff... but that IS the skill level, believe it

U2 have been playing for a good 35 years and they still don't play very well, but some people like their songs regardless, like the sound they make regardless... playing the music of The Smiths does not require a lot of musical skill, practice or knowledge... that isn't to say it can't be great art (that is matter of individual taste, of course) but it isn't particularly skillful

You could take beginner's guitar lessons for a year or so and never progress beyond that and you'd have no trouble playing the entire Smiths catalogue

With all due respect Dogg, that is BS. Based on that logic I should head over to the football thread and delete all your comments.

As someone who raked up about 4 gigs a week for 5-6 years I like to think I have an opinion, granted not an expert opinion but an opinion none the less.

The edge is a pretty limited guitarist and he will say that himself. Marr is far superior. I'm not saying he is the most technically brilliant player out there or that it was overly complicated music but it doesn't have to be. A band is all about the right ingredients, himself and Morrisey suited each others style.

For me if a guy can carve out his own style and sound that is an achievement. When he played with Beck, Talking Heads, Electronic its easy to recognise him.

Paint it as you will, garage band is a slur and Marr is better than that. As for your last point that goes for most bands out there.

Out of curiosty what do you think of John Frusciante ?

it is not BS, music is more complex than sport... Johnny Marr is creative, The Edge is creative... that is a totally different thing than skill... if I were in there saying "Paddy McCourt = Zico" you'd have a point... I'm not

Frusciante is good at what he does... what he does is basically Jimi Hendrix-style Rhythm guitar... as a lead guitarist, I don't really rate him

cdogg - I agree with you about the musical-skill level, but at the end of the day, doesn't it usually matter that the end result of the combined talents of music-writing, arrangement, lyrics, catchiness, obtianing a 'sound' etc, that is far more important?

Just for the record, I only own 5 albums by The Smiths (none by Morrisey and none by Joihnny Marr), I'm not a huge fan, but the result they got from all the above characteristics and not a lot of technical skill....is very impressive.
I also don't the homo-fascination with Morrisey or everyone going on about how great a guitarist Marr is, but put them together and you've got something.

I've seen both Morrisey and Marr playing their own gigs and its just not the same. Youtube is packed to the rafters with technically brilliant musicians but nobody cares about them.

I personally never cared for The Smiths music. It just wasn't a style I like. That being said, I always find it funny when musicians slam the talent of other musicians. I remember listening to Henry Rollins slam everything about U2's musical ability. I'm not a musician. Maybe Rollins is right. But it can't help sounding like bitter jealousy.

I dont really chat in here for that reason. Music is a big part of my life as I'm sure it is for a lot of people.

As for u2, technically they are limited but they never claim to be anything special. As a band I'm indifferent about them but Ill say this.

Most of the haters out there are simply jealous of their success. Also, they put on one hell of a live show. They are spectacular.

A great band is as much about chemistry as it is technical ability.

ps. Avoiding the MMA section. I have fuel on the DVR for later :cheer:

I can't really see any reason to get precious about music or treat it as a delicate subject, tbh (unlike football!). It's not like you're related to the artist or it's chosen for you by nationality or where you come from. If somebody said Captain Beefheart was shite I'd call them insane but I wouldn't be offended and I wouldn't like the person any less (I dont even like Slice less for liking Damon Albarn I just think he's mental). Cdogg's called me straight-up deaf at least twice  *shurgs*

I'm not precious at all about music but unlike football the conversation goes nowhere.

    eg, I like the Doors
    The doors are shite
    No they are not
    Yes they are
    you're bleeding deaf

Yeah, I guess. Interspersed with me making the kind of cutting analogies that forest gump might make on acid. I think I said Steely Dan were music to paint a barn door to at one point.

    Steely Dan are fucking great.

I'm completely different to U2, they've got a few ok songs I guess.

Damon Albarn is a very good songwriter.

All hyper famous people seem to amplify their trademark trait and become total parodies of themselves, U2 no different. when I was a late teen a quite liked the first two albums and when i was bit younger than that I really liked achtung baby. I wouldn't sit and listen to any of it but some of it is non-shite.

why do people consistently think skill and talent are synonymous?

I never attacked Johnny Marr's TALENT

I challenge anyone to find a post where I did
