not sure they're really meant to be stories with plots or meanings or anything like that. I dunno I've never really got into him. Seems like he sees himself more of a type with photographers or instrumental musicians than traditional movie directors/story tellers

The music in his films is usually great.

Some music from the great city of New Orleans. New Orleans has, and has always had, a great music scene. But it's a very localized one. Most of the musicians that become huge in the area stay in the area and don't really branch out. Of course there will always be exceptions like Dr. John, Harry Connick, The Neville Brothers, etc, but there are lots of singers and bands that are legendary in the city but pretty much unknown outside of it.

Kermit Ruffins. Probably the biggest local star in the city today. Opened up his own bar where he cooks during the day then plays at night. One of my overall favorites...

Irma Thomas. The New Orleans Queen of Soul. It's puzzling that she never hit it big outside of New Orleans, as she is on par with Aretha Franklin and Etta James. This song is a perfect example of belting out a tune with feeling...

TBC Brass Band. The great thing about New Orleans is you can go anywhere and hear great music. You don't have to go to a club or a bar. Street musicians are everywhere in New Orleans, and most of them are damn good. These guys started out playing on the street for tips before landing regular gigs around the city and just put out a new CD. My favorite out of all the New Orleans Brass Bands.

Yeah, Irma Thomas is certainly a legendary vocalist, but you are right, she is not known to the mainstream too much

I met the front man from Mogwai in Big Slope bar the other week. Well, by 'met' I mean we exchanged a nod in the beer garden as he sat down at the next table and I had the good manners to leave him alone.

I still haven't worked out which papers are what. Right after Thatcher died, I was in Binley, looking for a newspaper. I usually get The Sun, for no particular reason other than it's the one I've read the most on trips over. I think the Sun had a pro-Thatcher front page. And the Daily Mirror had an anti-Thatcher front page. Being left wing, I kind of wanted to grab the Mirror but I decided to go with the tradition Sun.

Both papers are trash to be honest. The down market tabloids are called 'red tops' here because they're all coloured that way except the daily mail which feigns respectability by going black and white. I liked Frankie Boyle's composite Daily Mail headline: 'Asylum seekers invade Britain with a new form of AIDS which lowers house prices'.
