    guy's a melodic genius, though

    Exactly:lol:

You could argue all day the merits or lack of merits with regard to McCartney's lyrical content but the guy casually tosses off earworms at a prodigious level

Stock/Aitken/Waterman had a great ear for melody too. So what? If you can't convert the melody into something non-heinous you should leave it in the ether for the next guy.

The Knife tickets booked for Manchester in October. Way hey. Solid year for gigs, so far.

McCartney DID convert his melodies into something non-heinous...you know, like The Beatles...

Sure he had Lennon to rein him in and prevent him from straying into Muzak territory but The Beatles wouldn't have been The Beatles without McCartney. I hate pretty much everything McCartney has done post-Beatles, that's what happens when you leave the guy to his own devices, but his contribution to the greatest band of all time is unquestionable.

I don't think there's a single McCartney song I'd voluntarily listen to. Maybe Blackbird. The guy's a bender.

In the hierarchy of benderdom even McCartney takes a backseat to Led Zeppelin though. I was watching an acoustic themed music show on bb4 last night and there was a 60s folk act playing in a field guy along with what was genuinely the WORST lead guitarist I'd ever heard. I had to press mute half way through, it was literally unlistenable. Narrator at the end - 'And that was English folk legend Roy Harper with a guest appearance on lead from Jimmy Page' :atu: :shit:

Led Zep = worst, worst, worst band in the history of music.

And if you flip it, McCartney balanced out Lennon

Hut doesn't listen to "music"... he listens to words... By far the best musician in the Beatles was Paul McCartney and his bass-playing, his arranging ideas, his singing is ALL OVER their music, whether on his songs or not... John Lennon's solo career was hardly an unqualified success, either

Jimmy Page worst lead guitarist ever:atu:

Now that is hilarious, especially coming form a guy who listens to shite like The Fall where nobody has any fucking idea what they are doing

If the guy who came up with the beautiful, melodic, hummable solos featured on songs like "Achille's Last Stand", "In The Light", "What Is and What Should Never Be", "The Rover", "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You", "Celebration Day", etc., etc. is the WORST lead guitarist ever, I'm sure I'd be overwhelmed by the best ever

Mark E Smith knows precisely what he's doing. And it's consciously more or less the precise opposite of benderism like Led Zepplin.

Page's lead playing was constantly out of time and generally heinous.

I thought the harmony on blackbird was terrible.

Crosby, Stills & Nash's blackbird blows the beatles' version out of the water.

    why? because he hates music?

His voice is perfect for what he does because what he does is perfect for people who can't sing or play

In the same way a simple, lightly cooked Salmon might be 'blasted out the water' by a salmon basted in chocolate sauce and licorice allsorts.

Yet he has a more interesting output than 98% of people who can sing and play 'well'.
