Boxing and moving was the problem, not the solution Every time he planted his feet and went after Maidana, he took over the fight He needed to be more aggressive, not less aggressive If he had Uncle Rog in his corner instead of that jive-ass father of his, he would have won it by a mile... Everytime he stopped trying to fight off the ropes and went after Maidana, he dominated the action... Everything Maidana got done, he got done when Floyd went to the ropes trying to use the same style he used to pick apart Jesus Chavez... Floyd fights well off the ropes, but it didn't work against Maidana... He needed to go after him, back him up
I'm not sure how much of that was Floyd's choice. My impression was that every time Maidana got low and off centre he backed Floyd up. Every time he reverted to front foot, hands up Floyd had a field day. Mo'dernity Mo'problems.
I feel like he was allowing it to happen, expecting that he'd be able to pick him apart off the ropes (it usually works for him) 9 times out of 10 Everytime he came forward, Maidana couldn't do anything but try and cover up
It works when the opponents respect the Money team and fight too cautious or to me they look in awe of the celebrity big star Money Mayweather. The difference here is that Madonna didn't care about that and just fought him like any other opponent and had a lot of success. This proves that when opponents are not mesmerized by the aura of Money, they have a lot of success against him. Money is good but he's not TGE like he thinks he is. Sugar Ray Leonard would've smashed his ass. As a matter of fact, Carmen Basilio would've beat his ass. No way in hell Basilio would be in awe of TMT. He would outwork him and pound on his head, ignoring the Mayvinci bs and stupid ass shoulder roll style.
I don't disagree... As a welter and above, Mayweather is amazingly overrated in an all-time sense and has been the beneficiary of a pretty shit era in the division... And I agree, Maidana fought exceptionally well and was not in awe, he deserves credit... I do think, though, that Floyd was trying to be too cute on the ropes, especially in the first half of the fight and that when he ditched that approach and went for a more aggressive approach, he had things his way... I think the best strategy for him if they fight again is to be much more offensively assertive
Maidana's tiredness and reverting to bad old habbits through tiredness had more to do with it than Floyd's adjustment, so it did.
I'll be in Waterbury tomorrow at 5:00 PM EST If you aren't there, it proves that you are a abject typist coward you want to debate this fight? You can take your complaints to the boxing commission, but you better be prepared for the Sergeant-At-Arms to toss your ass out on the street
I remember feeling that way watching Roy fight in the post-Antonio Tarver era. It started to look like Roy was allowing bad things to happen in order to get his counter opportunities, like he used to do, all the time in his better days...but he just couldn't pull the trigger anymore. You'd say to yourself, "Roy is going to turn it around right now, Roy is just playing possum". But his could never seem to get off anymore. Those old tactics that used to seem so effective, just got him into trouble now, over and over and over again. Could be this is the beginning of Floyd not being able to pull the trigger like he used to. Floyd is not a young man anymore, and I'm not sure he can transform into a Bernard Hopkins type fighter, in order to compensate for his lost reflexes. Floyd has a better chance of adjusting to that style then Roy ever did, but I'm not sure he has the physical strength and chin to carry it out for any length of time.
plus maidana is wild as fuck. Prior to Maidana he fucked Canelo up and looked great doing it. I also never saw RJJ as a boxer. He was a great athlete with great reflexes. He never had boxing to fall back on when those reflexes went away like Ali did. Floyd is a masterful boxer and he is super smart in the ring.
I think Floyd had trouble with Maidana's retard style, it was hard for him to time. Floyd has always said he loves it when his opponent fights in a rhythm because they're predictable and he'll work them out. Maidana just comes in swinging like a pleb and it's hard for Floyd to work out.
It is always possible for someone Floyd's age to age overnight, but we'll see in his next fight. It's likely he underestimated Maidana, even though Floyd is the consumate pro type. It seemed so obvious he'd school Maidana easily, that he probably didn't take Maidana seriously, whether he wanted to or not. Either way, it does seem to me like Maidana has improved since the Khan fight opcorn:
Floyd doesnt underestimate anyone and Maidana is trouble for anyone. Dont matter if you are in your early 20s or later 30s.
I don't think he's improved a whole lot, it's just Khan was/is underrated and people simply refuse to give him any credit
Thing is, PBF said himself that tying Madonna up is the key. But he tried to tie Madonna up and could not. He'll need a closed door pre fight meeting with the referee and make sure he steps in anytime there's a hint from pbf to do so. Biggest difference between the first fight and the second will most likely be the referee. I wonder how many people will notice. Think I will re watch pbf/Castillo 1&2 and see the difference in refereeing.
Well he was wrong as didn't work so well. Mayweather held more than normal but I don't think it was purely because he couldn't keep Maidana off. When Maidana was up close he didn't smother his punches like so many of Floyd's other opponents did. He was content to just let his punches land anywhere. Floyd's opponents usually get frustrated and because they can't land nice clean shots and then tired from all the misses. Chino approached cutting down Mayweather like a lumberjack instead of a surgeon.
Unless it was a bad night, he sure as fuck has improved since the Alexander fight. Plus Khan is horrible. Did you see the Julio Diaz fight? And the Peterdude fight? I think the Collazo fight is somewhat of a fluke. He'll probably get battered in his next fight.
Good point. People usually just stop throwing much at Floyd when they realise how hard it is to hit him clean.
Don't be ridiculous. Floyd is only human, he's 37 years old, undefeated, considered the best boxer in the world - it would be weird for him NOT to underestimate Maidana, even if subconscously. Who do you think he'd be more geared up to fight, and more mentally on point for, Maidana or Pacquiao? Floyd ALWAYS trains brilliantly, that is true, but it would be illogical for Floyd not to expect a relatively easy day at the office, countering the shit out of the crude Maidana, seeing as that's what pretty much the whole world expected. It was not supposed to be a competitive fight in the slightest. What were the odds, probably 5-1 Floyd at least?
It's a styles thing, he beat Maidana because he kept bapping combinations into Maidana's face all night, met fire with fire every session and put rounds in the bank after that SAVAGE body shot in the first. I did see the Diaz fight and he looked shit but as Hut mentioned I think Khan has also improved under Hunter. His next fight will probably be Mayweather so we'll see.
Bullshit. The man is where he is because he works hard for every fight. He is a gym rat and doesnt fuck around. Maidana is a more dificult fight for Floyd than this current Pac.
